Mitochondrial Quality and Quantity Control: Mitophagy Is a Potential Therapeutic Target for Ischemic Stroke

Meiying Song et al.

Summary: Ischemic stroke is a severe cerebrovascular disease that has a significant impact on the health and lives of people worldwide. Mitochondrial dysfunction plays a crucial role in the occurrence, development, and pathological processes of ischemic stroke. Strict control of mitochondrial quality and quantity through mitochondrial fission and fusion, as well as mitophagy, is beneficial for neuronal survival and normal function maintenance. However, excessive mitophagy can also lead to cell death. Modulating mitophagy may be a potential therapy for the prevention and prognosis of ischemic stroke.

Building a Bridge Between NMDAR-Mediated Excitotoxicity and Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Chronic and Acute Diseases

Rodrigo G. Mira et al.

Summary: Glutamate, as a major excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain, is involved in synaptic plasticity and excitotoxicity through NMDAR receptors. Mitochondria also play a crucial role in calcium homeostasis, and disruption of this homeostasis can lead to neuronal death.

Adapting Clinical Practice of Thrombolysis for Acute Ischemic Stroke Beyond 4.5 Hours: A Review of the Literature

Alexis N. Simpkins et al.

Summary: Advanced neuroimaging plays a critical role in selecting patients for recanalization therapy in an extended time window, which has been incorporated into endovascular treatment guidelines. For patients who cannot undergo endovascular thrombectomy within 4.5 hours, intravenous thrombolysis may also be safe and beneficial, but individual risk factors need to be carefully considered.

NMDA receptors and synaptic plasticity in the anterior cingulate cortex

Qi-Yu Chen et al.

Summary: The anterior cingulate cortex plays a critical role in pain modulation and pain-related emotional disorders. Long-term potentiation and long-term depression are key mechanisms underlying chronic pain and emotional disorders, with NMDARs playing important roles in these processes. Inhibiting NMDAR subtypes may offer potential drug targets for these conditions.

The neuroprotective potential of carotenoids in vitro and in vivo

Janani Manochkumar et al.

Summary: Carotenoids have been shown to play an important role in treating neurodegenerative diseases by providing neuroprotection through various pathways and lowering the risk of disease progression. Dietary intake of carotenoids in humans has been linked to a reduced risk of neurodegenerative diseases.

Participation of Glutamatergic Ionotropic Receptors in Excitotoxicity: The Neuroprotective Role of Prolactin

V Rodriguez-Chavez et al.

Summary: Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, acting via interaction with its cognate receptors. Excess glutamate concentration can lead to excitotoxicity, causing neuronal damage and cell death. Continuous elucidation of the molecular mechanisms underlying excitotoxicity is essential for preventing neuronal damage or death.

Amygdala-hippocampal innervation modulates stress-induced depressive-like behaviors through AMPA receptors

Hui Ma et al.

Summary: Chronic unpredictable mild stress can induce depressive-like traits in mice, and activation of the posterior basal lateral amygdala to ventral CA1 innervation can reverse some neural changes and alleviate depressive behaviors.

Functional Implications of Neurotransmitter Segregation

Fredy Cifuentes et al.

Summary: Neurotransmitter segregation is a phenomenon where neurons separately route transmitters to independent or neighboring processes, with plasticity and functional implications. Variations in segregation extent may contribute to altering neural activity, especially in certain physiopathological conditions and with age.

Economic burden of comorbid chronic conditions among survivors of stroke in China: 10-year longitudinal study

Ji Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that stroke survivors with chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes incur higher healthcare expenditures, with patients having multiple chronic conditions facing even greater financial burden. Better management of multimorbidity among stroke survivors is needed to reduce the economic impact of treating concurrent comorbidities.

Molecular Basis of Late-Life Depression

Chien-Yi Kuo et al.

Summary: Late-life depression (LLD) has a poor prognosis compared to depression at a young age, and novel treatments targeting the glutamatergic system may provide new options for improving outcomes. More research is needed to investigate the efficacy and safety of these treatments for LLD.
