Plasmodium vivax From Duffy-Negative and Duffy-Positive Individuals Share Similar Gene Pools in East Africa

Daniel Kepple et al.

Summary: Plasmodium vivax malaria, once thought to be rare in Africa, is increasingly reported in the continent, challenging previous beliefs. This study in Ethiopia and Sudan shows that P. vivax can be transmitted between individuals with and without the Duffy antigen, providing new insights into the spread of this disease in sub-Saharan Africa. No significant genetic differentiation was found between P. vivax from Duffy-negative and -positive individuals, indicating potential between-host transmission.

Genetic diversity and population structure of the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum surface protein Pfs47 in isolates from the lowlands in Western Kenya

Shirley A. Onyango et al.

Summary: Genetic diversity and haplotype distribution of the Pfs47 gene in Western Kenya were found to be high, with haplotype diversity ranging from 0.69 to 0.77 and nucleotide diversity from 0.10 to 0.12. Although negative Tajima's D values were observed across all sites, significant negative Fu's Fs values suggest potential population expansion or positive selection. Overall genetic differentiation index was not significant among parasite populations, indicating considerable gene flow between populations.

Spatial connectivity in mosquito-borne disease models: a systematic review of methods and assumptions

Sophie A. Lee et al.

Summary: Spatial connectivity is essential in mosquito-borne disease transmission, with many studies assuming distance-based connections and human movement as driving forces. Mechanistic models are more likely to assume connectivity due to human movement, possibly influenced by a lack of statistical models able to account for these connections.
