Pseudoreplication in physiology: More means less

David A. Eisner

Summary: The article discusses analyzing data from experiments comparing cellular physiology of different animal or human groups, highlighting potential errors with the commonly used t-test or ANOVA methods. It suggests a hierarchical, nested statistical approach to avoid issues in data analysis and improve reproducibility in the literature.

Clinical and translational insights on premature ventricular contractions and PVC-induced cardiomyopathy

Jose F. Huizar et al.

Summary: The medical community's understanding of the consequences of premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) and PVC-induced cardiomyopathy is largely derived from observational and large population-based studies, with difficulty in predicting the development of PVC-cardiomyopathy. Pre-clinical studies using large animal models have provided insights into the acute and chronic cardiac effects of PVCs and the mechanism of PVC-cardiomyopathy, highlighting potential myocardial substrates that could increase morbidity and mortality in patients with frequent PVCs and PVC-cardiomyopathy. This paper presents an up-to-date comprehensive review of these pre-clinical and clinical studies.

Summary: The study assessed the rate and outcomes of premature ventricular contractions (PVC)-cardiomyopathy in patients with cardiomyopathy, finding that amiodarone treatment significantly increased the successful suppression of PVCs and LV recovery, potentially improving survival in patients with PVC-cardiomyopathy.
