Altered adult neurogenesis and gliogenesis in patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy

Aswathy Ammothumkandy et al.

Summary: In individuals with epilepsy, the longer the duration of the disease, the fewer new neurons are produced and the greater the presence of immature astrocytes. Immature neurons are mostly inactive in cases with epilepsy, while immature astrocytes persist and their activity is associated with neuronal hyperactivity.

Functional connectivity between mesial temporal and default mode structures may help lateralize surgical temporal lobe epilepsy

Saramati Narasimhan et al.

Summary: Evaluating fMRI connectivity between mesial temporal structures and default mode network may aid in lateralization of mesial temporal lobe epilepsy, reduce the need for intracranial monitoring, and guide surgical planning.

Toward the development of a color visual prosthesis

Vernon L. Towle et al.

Summary: This study discusses the advantages of color prosthetic systems in reducing the likelihood of epileptic seizures. A 'hybrid' mode of stimulation is proposed to provide both B/W and color stimulation, to obtain color information without reducing spatial resolution. Software implementation strategies are discussed, along with the advantages and challenges of possible color prosthetic systems.

Temporal Lobe Epilepsy and Psychiatric Comorbidity

Valerio Vinti et al.

Summary: Temporal lobe epilepsy is commonly categorized into mesial and lateral types, with hallmark features including aura, unconsciousness, and automatisms for mesial type, and less evident psychomotor arrest, frequent clones and dystonic postures for the lateral type. The most frequent cause of TLE is hippocampal sclerosis, often associated with psychiatric comorbidities such as anxiety, depression, and interictal dysphoria. These comorbidities, combined with cognitive, learning, and behavioral impairments, are more common in TLE with hippocampal sclerosis and pharmacoresistance. Early detection and proper management of psychiatric comorbidities could greatly improve the quality of life for patients with TLE.

Associations of Brain Atrophy and Cerebral Iron Accumulation at MRI with Clinical Severity in Wilson Disease

Petr Dusek et al.

Summary: Individuals with Wilson disease (WD) showed widespread brain atrophy, most pronounced in central structures. Putaminal volume was associated with the Unified WD Rating Scale score and can be used as a surrogate imaging marker of clinical severity.

Evaluation of cerebral dysfunction in patients with chronic kidney disease using neuropsychometric and neurophysiological tests

Fabiola Sanchez-Meza et al.

Summary: Uremic encephalopathy refers to cerebral dysfunction caused by toxin accumulation in patients with chronic kidney disease. Testing for cognitive function and depression is important in identifying the condition, with CFF and PHES being validated techniques for measuring minimal hepatic encephalopathy. Early recognition of subclinical uremic encephalopathy is crucial for preventing avoidable events such as traffic and work accidents.

Organization of parietoprefrontal and temporoprefrontal networks in the macaque

Franco Giarrocco et al.

Summary: The study reveals that cortical connectivity in macaques can be described in terms of circuits among clusters of areas that share similar inputs and functional properties. The frontal cortex shows a dual subdivision into dorsal and ventral regions, with connections to parietal and temporal areas respectively. This organization reflects evolutionary trends in the vertebrate brain.

Chronic Kidney Disease and Cerebrovascular Disease Consensus and Guidance From a KDIGO Controversies Conference

Dearbhla M. Kelly et al.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease is a significant risk factor for cerebrovascular disease, with various potential mechanisms linking the two, including traditional and nontraditional risk factors. The presence of chronic kidney disease complicates stroke risk prediction, diagnosis, and management, leading to more severe strokes and a higher burden on patients.
