3-D Protoacoustic Imaging Through a Planar Ultrasound Array: A Simulation Workflow

Pratik Samant et al.

Summary: Pulsed proton beams generate protoacoustic emissions encoding dosimetry information in detectable acoustic waves. The frequency characteristics of protoacoustic emissions are examined and a formalism for characterizing protoacoustic signals considering transducer bandwidth and pulse duration is presented. Experimental analysis shows that proton-acoustic image reconstruction is possible even with high noise amplitude.

22 dB Signal-to-Noise Ratio Real-Time Proton Sound Detector for Experimental Beam Range Verification

Elia Arturo Vallicelli et al.

Summary: This paper presents a Proton Sound Detector (ProSD) that captures and senses weak acoustic signals emitted by fast energy deposition at the end of a proton beam range. The detector improves accuracy in measuring proton beam penetration depth in water, suggesting new possibilities for high-accuracy and real-time beam monitoring in cancer treatment. With experiments testing a 20 MeV proton beam, the ProSD achieved a Signal-to-Noise-Ratio of 22 dB, providing a precision of +/- 7.5 mu m compared to previous studies.

Summary: Accurately identifying the stopping location of ions in patients through ionoacoustic waves can help verify the effectiveness of particle beam therapy. The iTPD method, utilizing a 3.5 MHz PZT transducer and lock-in amplifiers, showed a localization accuracy of less than 15 micrometers in experimental water measurements.

Dictionary-based protoacoustic dose map imaging for proton range verification

Clara Freijo et al.

Summary: Proton radiotherapy can provide precise dose conformality in tumor areas, but uncertainties in the location of the proton Bragg peak hinder its full clinical potential. In vivo verification of proton range using acoustic signals could reduce uncertainty margins. A proposed dictionary-based method successfully detected range variations caused by anatomical changes and beam position alterations, with an average accuracy of 1.4 mm. This approach shows promise for in vivo verification of proton therapy.
