Transparency of deep neural networks for medical image analysis: A review of interpretability methods

Zohaib Salahuddin et al.

Summary: AI is increasingly used in clinical applications for diagnosis and treatment decisions, with deep neural networks showing equal or better performance than clinicians. However, their lack of interpretability calls for the development of methods to ensure their trustworthiness. Nine different types of interpretability methods have been identified for understanding deep learning models in medical image analysis, with ongoing research on improving interpretability and evaluation methods for deep neural networks.

Artifi cial Intelligence and Machine Learning Technologies in Cancer Care: Addressing Disparities, Bias, and Data Diversity

Irene Dankwa-Mullan et al.

Summary: Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies have great potential in enhancing clinical decision-making and improving quality care in cancer. However, without addressing bias in their design and implementation, these technologies may exacerbate existing health disparities. Therefore, it is crucial to take a thoughtful, transparent, and inclusive approach to mitigate potential bias and promote equity in cancer health.

Self-Supervised Adversarial Learning with a Limited Dataset for Electronic Cleansing in Computed Tomographic Colonography: A Preliminary Feasibility Study

Rie Tachibana et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the technical feasibility of using a self-supervised adversarial learning scheme to perform electronic cleansing (EC) on CT colonography (CTC) images. A 3D generative adversarial network (GAN) was pre-trained to perform EC on a limited dataset and then fine-tuned to each input case using a self-supervised learning scheme. The visually perceived quality of the virtual cleansing using this method was compared favorably to that of commercial EC software.

Al recognition of patient race in medical imaging: a modelling study

Judy Wawira Gichoya et al.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrate that standard AI deep learning models can be trained to accurately predict a person's race from medical images across multiple imaging modalities. This detection is not attributed to proxies or imaging-related surrogate covariates for race, and the model's ability persists over all anatomical regions and frequency spectrums of the images. The findings highlight the risks associated with deploying AI models in medical imaging, as they can accurately predict race even from corrupted or manipulated images that clinical experts may struggle with.
