A clinical case definition of post-COVID-19 condition by a Delphi consensus

Joan B. Soriano et al.

Summary: People with COVID-19 might experience long-term symptoms known as long COVID or long-haul COVID. The lack of a standardized definition hinders the understanding and treatment of this condition. In a WHO-led Delphi process, a consensus definition was developed, stating that post-COVID-19 condition occurs in individuals with a history of SARS-CoV-2 infection, with symptoms lasting for at least 2 months and impacting everyday functioning. This common framework provides a foundation for future studies and therapy.

Long-term cardiovascular outcomes of COVID-19

Yan Xie et al.

Summary: Individuals with COVID-19, even those who were not hospitalized during the acute phase of the infection, are at an increased long-term risk of various cardiovascular disorders. A study using national healthcare databases found that beyond the first 30 days after infection, individuals with COVID-19 have an elevated risk of developing cerebrovascular disorders, heart diseases, and other cardiovascular complications. The risk increases depending on the care setting during the acute phase.

Risks of myocarditis, pericarditis, and cardiac arrhythmias associated with COVID-19 vaccination or SARS-CoV-2 infection

Martina Patone et al.

Summary: The study found that there is an increased risk of myocarditis associated with the first dose of ChAdOx1 and BNT162b2 vaccines, as well as the first and second doses of the mRNA-1273 vaccine in the 1-28 days post-vaccination period. Additionally, individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infection also face a greater risk of myocarditis, pericarditis, and cardiac arrhythmia.

Thrombosis in hospitalized patients with viral respiratory infections versus COVID-19

Nathaniel R. Smilowitz et al.

Summary: The study compared the incidence of thrombosis in patients hospitalized with non-COVID-19 acute viral respiratory illnesses from 2012 to 2014 to those hospitalized with COVID-19 in a large health system in New York. It was found that the risk of thrombosis was lower in patients with viral respiratory illnesses compared to those with COVID-19. Further investigations into thrombosis mechanisms and risk reduction strategies in viral respiratory infections are needed.

Diagnosis-wide analysis of COVID-19 complications: an exposure-crossover study

William Murk et al.

Summary: This study utilized United States health claims data to investigate the complications of COVID-19, confirming and providing risk estimates for numerous disorders associated with the disease, such as viral pneumonia, respiratory failure, acute kidney failure, and sepsis. These findings can offer guidance for prognosis, treatment decisions, and patient counseling.

Endothelial Dysfunction in the Brain Setting the Stage for Stroke and Other Cerebrovascular Complications of COVID-19

Maithili Sashindranath et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a wide range of neurological sequelae and complications including thromboses. The disease is characterized by hypercoagulability and a thrombo-inflammatory response targeting endothelial cells, with unique features of cerebral endothelium possibly contributing to increased rates of cerebrovascular pathology associated with COVID-19.

Pulmonary embolism in patients with COVID-19: incidence, risk factors, clinical characteristics, and outcome

Oscar Miro et al.

Summary: In this study, the incidence, risk factors, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of pulmonary embolism (PE) in COVID-19 patients attending emergency departments before hospitalization were investigated. PE incidence in COVID-19 patients was significantly higher compared to non-COVID-19 patients, with unique characteristics such as smaller pulmonary artery involvement and lower D-dimer increase. While PE in COVID-19 patients may not increase mortality, the mortality rate is higher in COVID-19 patients with PE compared to non-COVID-19 patients with PE.

Safety of the BNT162b2 mRNA Covid-19 Vaccine in a Nationwide Setting

Noam Barda et al.

Summary: The study found that after receiving the BNT162b2 vaccine, most adverse events were not associated with an increased risk, although there was a slight increase in the risk of myocarditis. On the other hand, infection with the Covid-19 virus significantly increased the risk of many serious adverse events.

Risk of thrombocytopenia and thromboembolism after covid-19 vaccination and SARS-CoV-2 positive testing: self-controlled case series study

Julia Hippisley-Cox et al.

Summary: The study found increased risks of haematological and vascular events leading to hospital admission or death within short time intervals after first doses of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 and BNT162b2 mRNA vaccines. The risks of these events were higher and more prolonged after SARS-CoV-2 infection compared to vaccination in the same population.
