Modal analysis of an arch dam combining ambient vibration measurements, advanced fluid-element method and modified engineering approach

Xiangfeng Guo et al.

Summary: This paper presents a modal analysis of an arch dam using three different techniques: statistical analysis of ambient vibration data, fluid-element method, and Westergaard method. The results show that the fluid-element method accurately predicts the first 10 natural frequencies, while the Westergaard method significantly underestimates the frequencies for the first few modes when using the same parameters.

An automated operational modal analysis algorithm and its application to concrete dams

Jianming Li et al.

Summary: With the increasing use of long-term dynamic monitoring systems in civil engineering structures, automated operational modal analysis (OMA) has become an interesting area of research for structural health monitoring. This study proposes a three-stage automated OMA algorithm based on a combination of second-order blind identification (SOBI) and covariance-driven stochastic subspace identification (SSI-COV), which addresses the limitations of existing parametric and nonparametric algorithms. The proposed method is validated using simulated data and real monitoring data, showing excellent performance in separating and identifying physical modes.

A fast collapsed Gibbs sampler for frequency domain operational modal analysis

Quentin Dollon et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a fast Gibbs sampler for solving a fully Bayesian problem in operational modal analysis. The sampler is able to infer modal properties from the FFT of well-separated modes and capture system identification and related uncertainties through a posterior distribution. The sampling scheme demonstrates fast convergence through two strategies.

An improved Hilbert-Huang transform method for modal parameter identification of a high arch dam

Bowen Wei et al.

Summary: A method combining empirical mode decomposition and masking signal processing is proposed to address difficulties in extracting vibration signals of a high arch dam flow discharge structure under water flow excitation. By mixing different frequency parts of the signal and effectively inhibiting modal confusion, the method accurately identifies the modal parameters of the structure.

Modal analysis of structures based on distributed measurement of dynamic strains with optical fibers

Summary: The article discusses a method for extracting modal parameters of structures based on dynamic strain distributed measurements using the AT-BOTDA optical fiber sensor and SSI-DATA data analysis method. Experimental results show that distributed vibration strains collected by AT-BOTDA are sufficient for accurate determination of the structure's mode shapes.

Uncertainty quantification of the Modal Assurance Criterion in operational modal analysis

Szymon Gres et al.

Summary: The Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC) is a modal indicator used to determine if mode shapes correspond to the same mode in structural monitoring. The MAC inherits statistical properties when estimated from measurement data, leading to uncertainty in its evaluation. MAC estimates for different mode shapes have a Gaussian approximation, while estimates for equal mode shapes are linked to a v2 distribution.
