Quantitative assessment of the complexity of talus slope morphodynamics using multi-temporal data from terrestrial laser scanning (Tatra Mts., Poland)

Zofia Raczkowska et al.

Summary: From 2011 to 2019, high-mountain talus slopes in the Tatra Mts. were observed using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) measurements, showing that changes in talus slopes are essentially effects of debris flows. Significant differences in spatiotemporal changes between two adjacent talus cones were found to be related to their catchment lithologies. The spatial extent of talus slope change during the period of TLS monitoring is confined to debris flows tracks.

Characterisation of a multi-view fringe projection system based on the stereo matching of rectified phase maps

A. Shaheen et al.

Summary: Multi-view fringe projection systems offer a solution to limitations of single camera-projector systems, without the need for projector characterization. The method uses rectified phase maps to determine correspondences and triangulate phase values for 3D reconstruction of objects, eliminating the need for registration of point clouds from multiple perspectives.

Summary: The study introduces a new method for change detection, providing more accurate measurements of rockfall and movement in geological scenes. By deriving Dominant Movement Directions (DMD), the method avoids the influence of local surface normals in measuring changes. The new approach has been successful in three LiDAR-derived cases, achieving more accurate measurements in comparison.

A New Simplification Algorithm for Scattered Point Clouds with Feature Preservation

Miao Gong et al.

Summary: The paper proposes a new simplification algorithm for scattered point clouds, which reduces data while retaining data features by constructing the Delaunay neighborhood, extracting edge points, using the moving least-square method, and identifying potential feature points based on the discrete gradient idea. This method is effective in models with different curvatures and can avoid the hole phenomenon in simplification process. Further improvement in robustness and anti-noise ability can be achieved by extending the neighborhood of the point cloud to multiple levels and finding a balance between simplification speed and accuracy.

A Comparison Method for 3D Laser Point Clouds in Displacement Change Detection for Arch Dams

Yijing Li et al.

Summary: This study presents a displacement change detection method for arch dams based on a two-step point cloud registration and contour model comparison method. By using stable rock as the correspondence element, a two-step registration method from rough to fine is proposed using the iterative closest point algorithm to describe the coordinate unification of the two states' data without control network and target. Then, the contour model fitting the point clouds is used to compare the change in distance between models, improving the accuracy of comparing the two surfaces without being affected by the roughness of the point cloud.
