PD-LAMP smartphone detection of SARS-CoV-2 on chip

Ashlee J. J. Colbert et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic in 2019 highlighted the urgent need for rapid, reliable, and portable diagnostics. The gold standard diagnostic for SARS-CoV-2 is quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRTPCR) test, but it has limitations in low resource areas. Point-of-care (PoC) testing has been emphasized, and various tests have been approved, including rapid detection methods using isothermal amplification. This study introduces a new rapid and portable isothermal nucleic acid detection device that combines reverse transcription loop mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) with particle imaging technique, particle diffusometry (PD), to successfully detect SARS-CoV-2 in only 35 minutes.

Towards the use of a smartphone imaging-based tool for point-of-care detection of asymptomatic low-density malaria parasitaemia

Ashlee J. Colbert et al.

Summary: This study combines particle diffusometry with loop mediated isothermal amplification to develop a smartphone device that can rapidly detect low-density parasitaemia, particularly in asymptomatic malaria cases. By measuring the Brownian motion of fluorescent nanoparticles in solution through video, the device successfully detected as few as 3 parasites/mu L of blood with high sensitivity and specificity.

Dynamic light scattering microrheology for soft and living materials

Pamela C. Cai et al.

Summary: The method presented involves using dynamic light scattering to measure the viscoelastic moduli of soft materials in the single-scattering limit. It requires only a small sample volume and can measure up to six decades in time of rheological behavior. This microrheology technique has been successfully applied to various soft materials, proving to be easy, efficient, and cost-effective for guiding new material design and enhancing understanding of naturally derived material behaviors.
