Porous (K0.5Na0.5)0.94Li0.06NbO3-polydimethylsiloxane piezoelectric composites harvesting mechanical energy for efficient decomposition of dye wastewater

Xian Cheng et al.

Summary: Piezoelectricity is a highly functional property that has been widely studied in various applications, including piezoelectric catalysis and mechanical energy harvesting. In this work, (K0.5Na0.5)(0.94)Li0.06NbO3 (KNN6L) piezoelectric powders were combined with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to develop flexible and recyclable KNN6L-PDMS porous piezoelectric composites. These composites demonstrated a degradation rate of approximately 91% for Rhodamine B dye wastewater under mechanical vibration, and the piezocatalytic activity remained excellent even after multiple decomposition cycles. Furthermore, COMSOL simulations confirmed the relationship between piezoelectric potential and piezocatalysis. The content of piezoelectric powders positively affected the magnitude of the generated piezoelectric potential. The catalytic mechanism was attributed to the generation of reactive oxygen species, such as center dot O-2(-) and center dot OH, in a water environment due to the strong piezoelectric effect of the porous composites. The flexible and recyclable porous piezoelectric composites exhibited outstanding performance in piezoelectric catalysis, which holds great promise for environmental remediation applications.

Molecular dynamics simulations on adhesion energy of PDMS-silica interface caused by molecular structures and temperature

Pan Gao et al.

Summary: Research investigates the adhesion at nanoscale of PDMS-silica interface by establishing a molecular model. The results show that PDMS with 30 repeat units has the highest adhesion energy, but temperature has the greatest proportional change in adhesion energy. Increasing temperature within a certain range benefits adhesion energy improvement, along with the molecular weight or polarity of PDMS terminal group.

Investigation of the elastic properties of poly (methyl methacrylate) reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets

Mahmut Muhammettursun et al.

Summary: The technique for synthesizing poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) using graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) has been improved to enhance the elastic properties of the polymer. The addition of GNPs at 2 wt% by mass increased compressive strength by 42.7% and Rockwell hardness by 19.9%. The structural changes due to the addition of GNPs were found to be uniquely linked to improvements in elastic parameters of the PMMA/GNPs nanocomposite.

Biomimetic Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube/Polydimethylsiloxane Nanocomposites with Temperature-Controlled, Hydrophobic, and Icephobic Properties

Yongyang Sun et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of biomimetic nanocomposites in aerospace applications for anti-/deicing by utilizing surface microstructure design and flexible temperature control capabilities. The presence of surface micropillars leads to increased ice adhesion strength and decreased ice/frost formation compared to flat surfaces, while higher temperatures result in reduced contact angle and ice adhesion strength. The results suggest promising opportunities for the use of biomimetic nanocomposites in aerospace for ice prevention and removal.
