Breaking through the dynamic strength-ductility trade-off in TiB reinforced Ti composites by incorporation of graphene nanoplatelets

Liang Liu et al.

Summary: Adjusting the three-dimensional reinforcement configuration by incorporating graphene nanoplatelets can overcome the strength-ductility incompatibility in titanium matrix composites. The addition of graphene nanoplatelets enhances both the dynamic strength and plasticity of the materials, while delaying the formation of adiabatic shear bands.

Improved mechanical properties in titanium matrix composites reinforced with quasi-continuously networked graphene nanosheets and in-situ formed carbides

Q. Yan et al.

Summary: A quasi-networked reinforcement structure in titanium matrix composites was achieved by uniformly coating Ti-6Al-4V spherical powders with a graphene nanosheet layer, leading to higher tensile strength and good ductility compared to randomly dispersed graphene nanosheets and TiC. The study provided a method to fabricate titanium matrix composites with high strength and good ductility by forming a networked hybrid reinforcement structure.

Insight into the formation mechanism and interaction of matrix/TiB whisker textures and their synergistic effect on property anisotropy in titanium matrix composites

Jianwen Le et al.

Summary: Considerable studies have been done on property anisotropy induced by crystallographic textures in processed pure titanium and titanium alloys, but limited information is available for the intrinsic coupling of matrix and reinforcement textures and their synergistic effect on property anisotropy in titanium matrix composites. In this study, an advanced EBSD/EDS coupling method was used to investigate the formation mechanism of primary alpha and secondary alpha textures in the matrix alloy. It is revealed that the reinforcement TiBw displays a specific texture after hot rolling and has little effect on the matrix texture component. Significant anisotropies in the tensile strength and ductility can be observed, which is the synergistic effect of the matrix texture and the aligned TiBw.

Uniformly dispersing GNPs for fabricating graphene-reinforced pure Ti matrix composites with enhanced strength and ductility

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: Uniform dispersion of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) in titanium matrix is essential for high-performance composites. This study successfully dispersed GNPs in commercial pure titanium (CP Ti) powders through 3D vibration milling, leading to improved strength and ductility in the fabricated composites. The mechanical improvements were attributed to load transfer from uniformly dispersed GNPs and the pinning effect of in-situ generated titanium carbide (TiC).

Summary: This paper investigates the interfacial structures and physico-mechanical properties of graphene nanoplates reinforced Cu matrix composites. By introducing in-situ formed WxCy nano-layers and carbide nanoparticles, strong interfacial bonding and improved cohesive strength were achieved, leading to a good balance between strength and electrical conductivity in GNPs-W/Cu composites. The engineered interfaces in GNPs-W/Cu matrix composites simultaneously achieve dislocation strengthening, refinement strengthening, and load transfer strengthening.

Summary: A feasible strategy to fabricate graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) reinforced nickel (Ni) matrix composites is developed, in which the in-situ exfoliation and dispersion of GNP are synchronized. Characterization results show that GNPs are stripped from the graphite bulk and homogeneously distributed on Ni powders surfaces, resulting in significantly improved mechanical properties of the composites.

Breaking through the strength-ductility trade-off in graphene reinforced Ti6Al4V composites

Yanjie Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the strengthening and toughening mechanisms of Ti6Al4V composites reinforced with graphene network (GN) through experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The embedded GN provides grain refinement, deformation compatibility, dislocation blocking, and crack restraint and bridging, leading to improved strength and ductility of the composites. Despite a more brittle-like fracture surface, the GN interactions with dislocations and crack-bridging mechanisms contribute to delaying the failure of the composites and enhancing their ductility.

Summary: The graphene network/Cu (GN/Cu) composites are able to achieve a high strength and good ductility combination with low graphene content in the copper matrix. The efficient grain refinement strengthening, dislocation strengthening and load transfer strengthening are achieved through the construction of a graphene network in the composites. Additionally, effective crack bridging and deflection provided by the graphene network contribute to the toughening of the GN/Cu composites.
