Solute drag assessment of grain boundary migration in Au

Ayush Suhane et al.

Summary: In this study, solute drag in gold alloys with Fe and Bi impurities at a specific grain boundary was analyzed using density functional theory calculations. Through comparing experimental data and using a model, it was determined that Bi is a strongly segregating element, while the segregation of Fe is relatively weak. The proposed approach shows advantages in trend predictions but also has some quantitative uncertainties.

Exploring the deformation behavior of nanotwinned Al-Zr alloy via in situ compression

N. A. Richter et al.

Summary: Nanotwinned metals, with high strength and ductility, have been studied. In this study, supersaturated solid-solution Al-Zr alloys with a high density of growth twins were fabricated. The incoherent twin boundaries (ITBs) were found to be strong barriers to dislocation motion, while mobile partial dislocations promoted plasticity. This study provides a strategy for incorporating ITBs and 9R phase into Al alloys for simultaneous benefits to strength and deformability.

Tribological behaviors of nanotwinned Al alloys

Yifan Zhang et al.

Summary: Wear-induced damages result in significant materials loss annually. Aluminum alloys are commonly used in industry but have low wear resistance. In this study, the tribological behaviors of different aluminum alloys were compared using nanoscratch, and it was found that nanotwinned Al-Ni alloys exhibited lower coefficient of friction and higher wear resistance. The enhanced wear properties of Al-Ni alloys were attributed to their high strength and the evolution of nanotwinned microstructures into gradient nanograins.

Microstructural evolution of nanotwinned Al-Zr alloy with significant 9R phase

N. A. Richter et al.

Summary: Aluminum (Al) alloys are widely used in various industries, but have lower mechanical strength compared to conventional steels. Adding Zr elements can significantly improve the mechanical properties of Al alloys, making them harder and more ductile. By synthesizing Al-Zr alloy films with a nanotwinned structure, it is possible to produce strong Al alloys with enhanced mechanical properties.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution of microstructures and multistage phase transformations from micro/nanocrystalline to an entirely amorphous structure in Al-Cr alloys by tailoring the composition of Cr. The research establishes a mechanistic connection between the Cr composition-dependent evolution of microstructure and ultrahigh strength as well as plasticity, revealing the benefits of building nanocomposites through a multistage phase transformation to improve the plasticity of nanocrystalline and amorphous materials.

Crystallographic texture influences on the thermal stability of nanocrystalline materials

Srikant Gollapudi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of crystallographic texture on the total amount of solute segregated at grain boundaries and weighted grain boundary energy of nanocrystalline materials. The findings show that nanostructures with random texture have higher values of X-gb,X-tot and gamma(w) compared to those with {111} < 110 > texture, which has implications for the development of thermally stable nanocrystalline materials. The effect of texture is further discussed through a case study on the Ni-W system using the nanocrystalline stability criterion proposed by Kalidindi and Schuh.

Summary: By controlling the annealing temperature and chemical composition, two distinct nanocrystalline stability mechanisms can be activated in the same Ni(P) alloy, including thermodynamic stabilization and Zener pinning. Each mechanism has its own advantages and disadvantages, with the thermodynamic mechanism yielding a more refined and stable grain size, while the Zener pinning mechanism provides higher pinning strength.
