A Comparative Study of Microstructures and Mechanical Behavior of Laser Metal Deposited and Electron Beam Melted Ti-6Al-4V

Mehmood Rashid et al.

Summary: The microstructures and mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V fabricated using laser metal deposition (LMD) and electron beam melting (EBM) were compared, showing that LMD samples have superior hardness, strength and work hardening exponent (n), while EBM samples are more ductile. The differences in mechanical behavior of the two samples originate from their distinct dislocation densities within alpha and the relative proportions of Widmanstatten and colony type arrangements of the alpha+beta laths.

Microstructure evolution and hardness of S30C carbon steel produced by powder bed fusion using an electron beam and subsequent heat treatments

Yunwei Gui et al.

Summary: The microstructure and hardness of S30C carbon steel fabricated via PBF-EB technology were investigated, as well as the influence of subsequent heat treatments. The results showed a height-dependent relationship between the microstructure and hardness along the building direction. Quenched samples exhibited lath martensite with maximum hardness, which transformed to tempered martensite after tempering. This study provides a research basis for the application of PBF-EB technology in the development of high-performance carbon steel.

Defects in additive manufactured metals and their effect on fatigue performance: A state-of-the-art review

Niloofar Sanaei et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing is emerging as an alternative method for producing unique and complex parts, with fatigue performance being a key consideration. Defects such as Lack of Fusion, porosities, and un-melted particles can affect fatigue performance, but can be minimized through process optimization and post-processing. Analytical techniques can reduce the need for costly fullscale testing for assessing reliability in fatigue performance.

The role of defects and characterisation of tensile behaviour of EBM Additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V: An experimental study at elevated temperature

Alok Gupta et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the relationship between the tensile properties of EBM Ti-6Al-4V alloy parts and parameters as well as defects. It finds that at high temperatures, material tensile strength decreases but ductility increases, while surface roughness and internal defects have a detrimental effect on material performance, and factors such as pore orientation and thermal history differences lead to material strength anisotropy.
