Optimal preparation of high-entropy boride-silicon carbide ceramics

Yan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of using borothermal and boro/carbothermal reduction methods in fabricating high-entropy boride-silicon carbide (HEB-SiC) ceramics. It was found that spark plasma sintering at 2000 degrees C could achieve HEB-SiC ceramics with > 98% theoretical density, and the addition of SiC resulted in slight coarsening of the microstructure. The results suggested that the choice of powder processing method and the inclusion of SiC phase could optimize the preparation of high-entropy boride-based ceramics.

Modeling the pyrolysis of preceramic polymers: A kinetic study of the polycarbosilane SMP-10

Thomas S. Key et al.

Summary: A material model was developed to predict changes in mass, density, and volume of cured preceramic polymers for CMC matrices as they pyrolyze into ceramics. The ability to accurately predict changes in a matrix material's volume is essential to determining processing conditions that will efficiently minimize composite scrap rates. Density plays a dominant role in volume shrinkage during the pyrolysis process.

Iron and steel recycling: Review, conceptual model, irreducible mining requirements, and energy implications

L. D. Danny Harvey

Summary: The production of new steel through recycling requires up to 10 times less energy than producing steel from virgin iron ore, but some primary steel is still needed to compensate for shortcomings in steel collection and processing. While there are constraints on end-of-life steel recycling currently, there are prospects for reducing these constraints in the future.
