This paper proposes a simple strategy to prepare a field deployable SERS sensor, called SERS smart sand (SERS3), by modifying sea sand with Ag NPs. The prepared SERS3 sensor can be easily spread on the surface of interest for sensing and can detect ppb level of Raman probe using a low magnification lens. The feasibility of in situ detection of KNO3 in soil was also demonstrated.
