Cellular binding, uptake and biotransformation of silver nanoparticles in human T lymphocytes

Anzhela Malysheva et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the presence of silver nanoparticles in nanoparticulate form after being taken up by human lymphocytes. Biotransformation of AgNPs is primarily dominated by sulfidation, serving as a detoxification pathway for cells. Toxicity of AgNPs is mainly driven by internalized silver, with differences in toxicity between nanoparticles of different coatings and sizes being minimized when expressed as intracellular mass of silver per cell.

Structure and antimicrobial comparison between N-(benzyl) chitosan derivatives and N-(benzyl) chitosan tripolyphosphate nanoparticles against bacteria, fungi, and yeast

Mohamed E. I. Badawy et al.

Summary: The study involved the synthesis of N-(benzyl) chitosan (NBCh) derivatives by reacting chitosan with benzaldehyde analogs, followed by the preparation of nanoparticles with small particle sizes and narrow size distribution using ionotropic gelation. The NBCh derivatives exhibited significantly higher antimicrobial activity than chitosan, with the nanoparticles showing even higher efficacy. The antimicrobial efficacy was found to be directly related to the chemical derivatization of chitosan and the zeta potential of the nanoparticles.

Varied-shaped gold nanoparticles with nanogram killing efficiency as potential antimicrobial surface coatings for the medical devices

Ewelina Piktel et al.

Summary: The study synthesized a series of varied-morphology gold nanoparticles with potent antibacterial activity against a spectrum of clinical strains, including Candida albicans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and uropathogenic Escherichia coli. The optimized synthesis of gold nanoparticles allowed for the development of nanomaterials significantly more potent than previous formulations, with antimicrobial spectrum covering strains with different drug resistance mechanisms. The research highlights the potential for using non-spherical gold nanoparticles as new coatings targeting multidrug-resistant pathogens causing device-associated infections.
