Research on tribological properties of H13 steel of shield machine hob by laser shot peening

Yifeng Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper studies the application of laser shot peening (LSP) technology on H13 steel to improve the friction and wear performance of shield machine hob. Through experiments and simulation analysis, the influence of LSP parameters on the friction and wear performance of H13 steel after strengthening is studied. The results show that LSP treatment can significantly increase the residual stress and hardness of H13 steel, and reduce the friction coefficient and wear volume.

Characteristics of a modified H13 hot-work tool steel fabricated by means of laser beam powder bed fusion

Miwen Yuan et al.

Summary: In this study, a modified H13 hot-work tool steel was fabricated using laser beam powder bed fusion technology, and the effects of two post processing methods on the material properties were evaluated. The results showed that the impact toughness of the direct tempering samples was significantly lower than the conventional quenching followed by tempering samples, mainly due to the differences in work hardening ability and strain rate sensitivity caused by different microstructures.

Optimization of cryogenic treatment to improve the tribological behavior of Vanadis 6 steel using the Taguchi and grey relation approach

Venu Yarasu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of process variables on the wear rate, counterpart's material transfer, and friction coefficient of Vanadis 6 cold work ledeburitic tool steel by cryogenic treatment at different temperatures and subsequent tempering. Experimental results demonstrate that increasing the load leads to a higher wear rate, while the friction coefficient is significantly influenced by the sliding speed. To maximize the wear performance, it is recommended to process the steel at -140℃ with subsequent tempering at 170℃.

Microstructure heritance of metallographic feature in the anodization of carbon steels

Qidi Gu et al.

Summary: The anodization of carbon steels with typical metallographic structures revealed that the formation of anodized iron oxide films was inherited from the microstructural characteristics of the original metallographic structure through metallographic regulation. Different characteristics of the original metallographic structures could influence the anodization reaction rate and determine the thickness of the oxide layer on the substrate. Additionally, statistical analysis showed a connection between nanopore size and the original microstructure of the substrate on the anodized iron films.

The carbides, tensile properties, and work-hardening behavior of annealed H13 die steels with varied yttrium contents

Rongchun Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the micro-alloying of rare-earth yttrium (Y) was used to improve the fracture behavior and work-hardening ability of H13 die steel by modifying Cr23C6 and VC carbides. The addition of Y led to interruption and sphericalization of Cr23C6 carbides, increased quantity of VC carbides, and higher work-hardening exponent. Fractographic studies showed a transition from cleavage failure to ductile rupture with increasing Y content, but excess Y content resulted in detrimental inclusion clusters in dimples.

Effect of Deep Cryogenic Treatment on Corrosion Behavior of AISI H13 Die Steel

Tarang Shinde et al.

Summary: AISI H13 die steel specimens were subjected to various heat treatments followed by corrosion studies, revealing that the heat-treated specimens exhibited better resistance to corrosion due to lower grain boundary area compared to specimens treated with deep cryogenic treatment. Additionally, both surface modification treatments enhanced the corrosion behavior of the untreated alloy.

New Ms-formula for exact microstructural prediction of modern 3rd generation AHSS chemistries

Simone Kaar et al.

Summary: Precise adjustment of microstructural constituents, especially the volume fraction of retained austenite, is crucial for 3rd generation AHSS. Avoiding the formation of fresh martensite during final cooling is also essential to maintain mechanical properties. A new formula for predicting martensite start temperature with a wide composition range is proposed to accurately determine M-s temperature for different C contents.

Effect of cryogenic treatment duration on the microhardness and tribological behavior of 40CrMoV5 tool steel

Ravi Thakurai et al.

Summary: Cryogenic treatment was performed on hardened 40CrMoV5 (H13) tool steel samples for different soaking periods, with the heat-treated sample exhibiting the highest hardness due to non-tempered martensite. Among cryogenically treated samples, the 36-hour soaking time sample showed the maximum hardness. The study revealed that the heat-treated sample had the smallest wear track width compared to the cryogenically treated sample for 36 hours, in line with the hardness values.
