Phytochemicals as steel corrosion inhibitor: an insight into mechanism

Nishant Bhardwaj et al.

Summary: Plant extracts are being recognized as a renewable, low-cost, and eco-friendly alternative to toxic chemical corrosion inhibitors. The main mechanisms of corrosion inhibition by plant extracts include physisorption, chemisorption, and retrodonation, with different functional groups of phytochemicals participating in the process. The exact mechanism of inhibition depends on the specific phytochemical present in the plant extracts.

Amino acid and cinnamaldehyde conjugated Schiff bases as proficient corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in 1 M HCl at higher temperature and prolonged exposure: Detailed electrochemical, adsorption and theoretical study

Sanjoy Satpati et al.

Summary: The three Schiff bases composed of cinnamaldehyde and different amino acids were synthesized and shown to have anti-corrosion effects on mild steel in hydrochloric acid solution. Among them, the tryptophan Schiff base demonstrated the highest inhibitory effect, while the glycine Schiff base had the least effectiveness. The inhibitors showed significant corrosion inhibition efficiency under different temperatures and exposure times, with their chemisorption on mild steel confirmed by thermodynamic and kinetic parameters as well as molecular dynamics simulations.

Enhancement of protection of copper through electropolymerised poly-2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole and its composite films

K. Vinothkumar et al.

Summary: The fabrication of impervious adherent polymeric coatings over metallic surfaces is an effective strategy for metal protection from corrosion. Poly-2-amino-1,3,4-thiadiazole (p-ATD) films were electrodeposited on copper surfaces using cyclic voltammetry to prevent corrosion in a corrosive medium. The addition of metal oxides, particularly nano TiO2, significantly improved corrosion resistance compared to other composites. The combination of p-ATD and metal oxides suppressed the hydrogen evolution reaction, leading to enhanced corrosion protection.

Inhibition of mild steel corrosion in 1 M HCl by chondroitin sulfate and its synergistic effect with sodium alginate

Weiwei Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a natural polysaccharide mixture inhibitor composed of chondroitin sulfate derived from pig cartilage (CS-PC) and sodium alginate (SA) was developed for the protection of mild steel in hydrochloric acid media. The synergistic effect of the two polysaccharides towards adsorption on mild steel in 1 M HCl was investigated using various methods such as weight loss test, electrochemical investigations, SEM, SECM, and UV methods. The results demonstrated a strong inhibition performance and a synergistic effect of the CS-PC and SA mixture, compared to individual inhibitors, with potential guiding significance for the rational design of efficient corrosion inhibitors.

Anti-corrosive mechanism of poly (N-ethylaniline)/sodium silicate electrochemical composites for copper: Correlated experimental and in-silico studies

Hao Liu et al.

Summary: A novel electropolymerized strategy was used to fabricate Poly (N-ethylaniline) (PNEA) composites with varying silicate content on copper, with PNEA-10Si exhibiting optimized properties at 10 mM silicate content. Electrochemical, morphological, and solution analyses showed that PNEA-10Si had superior anti-corrosive performance compared to PNEA, with stable topography and improved protection capacity during long-time immersion.

Corrosion inhibition properties of small peptides: DFT and Monte Carlo simulation studies

Anton Kasprzhitskii et al.

Summary: By employing Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Monte Carlo (MC) computational methods, this study investigated the corrosion inhibition potential and mechanism of small peptides derived from aliphatic amino acids on iron, copper, and aluminum surfaces. The research demonstrates that the adsorption energy of peptides on metal surfaces increases with the number of amino acid residues, leading to enhanced inhibitory effects. The findings highlight the promising prospects of using small peptides as effective green corrosion inhibitors.

A Review on Plants and Biomass Wastes as Organic Green Corrosion Inhibitors for Mild Steel in Acidic Environment

Norbaayah Ahmad Reza et al.

Summary: Acid corrosion is a problem involving acid solutions that can lead to over-etching and metal degradation. Conventional corrosion inhibitors have issues such as nitrites and chromates that can cause health and environmental problems. Organic green corrosion inhibitors, which form a protective layer to prevent metal dissolution, are being studied as alternatives.

The Inhibition Action of Viscum Album Extract on the Corrosion of Carbon Steel in Hydrochloric Acid Solution

Osama A. Elgyar et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Viscum album plant extract can serve as a corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in hydrochloric acid solution under certain temperature and dosage, effectively reducing the corrosion rate. The inhibition efficacy reached 96.3% at higher inhibitor doses. Additionally, the adsorption process of the extract follows the Temkin model and exhibits a chemical adsorption nature with adsorption free energy less than -40 kJ/mol.
