Process responses during μFSW of AA6061-T6 under the influence of triple-spiral micro-grooves on shoulder end-surface

Summary: This study examined the impact of using tools with triple-spiral micro-grooves on process responses in mu FSW, and the effect of different cross-sections of micro-grooves on these responses. The interaction between the shoulder end-surface and plasticized sheet material crucially determined the mechanical, thermal, and flow characteristics of the material, affecting the process responses. Among the different cross-sections of micro-grooves, the right-trapezoidal type II showed the best performance with moderate process loads, superior weld surface finish, and tensile properties.

Stepped-shoulder friction stir welding to alleviate weld thinning for dissimilar AA2195-T8/AA2219-T6 alloys

Summary: A new stepped-shoulder friction stir welding tool was proposed for joining AA2195-T8 Al-Cu-Li and AA2219-T6 Al-Cu alloys, producing a sound joint with a weld thinning of 0.05 mm. The interface between the materials was free of cavities and kissing bond, with a tensile strength reaching 352 MPa, equal to 81.7% of the base AA2219-T6 alloys.
