Study on the deformation mechanism of a high-nitrogen duplex stainless steel with excellent mechanical properties originated from bimodal grain design

Yumeng Zhang et al.

Summary: The alloy design of high-nitrogen duplex stainless steels (DSSs) has gained significant attention for their exceptional strength, ductility, and anticorrosive properties. This study presents the development of a DSS 2202 with a fine austenite grain and bimodal ferrite structure through innovative heat treatment and rolling processes. The result shows an increase in yield strength (YS) from 416.5 to 716.4 MPa while maintaining a high total elongation of 45.8%. The transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) effect was successfully suppressed during the tensile test. The work proposes a novel strengthening method by triggering a rapid dislocation proliferation mechanism in coarse ferrite, which achieves a dislocation density equivalent to that of austenite. This study provides a new approach for selecting materials for structural components that require high yield ratios and corrosion resistance.

PREDICTION OF MECHANICAL PROPERTIES AS A FUNCTION OF WELDING VARIABLES IN ROBOTIC GAS METAL ARC WELDING OF DUPLEX STAINLESS STEELS SAF 2205 WELDS THROUGH ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORKS

Carolina Payares-Asprino

Summary: The use of artificial neural networks in predicting the mechanical properties of duplex stainless steel welds has shown promising results, with less than 2% error between predicted and experimental values. It was observed that the tensile strength values of the welds were higher than the base metal and increased with increasing arc current. Additionally, the yield strength and elongation values of the welds were slightly lower than the base metal, possibly due to microstructural changes during welding with increased arc energy.
