Ultra-high strength yet superplasticity in a hetero-grain-sized nanocrystalline Au nanowire

Libo Fu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that ultra-small nanocrystalline gold nanowires with grains in both the Hall-Petch and inverse Hall-Petch grain-size regions exhibit high strength and superplasticity at room temperature. The plastic deformation occurs in two stages, involving intergrain plasticity and intragrain plasticity.

Influence of twin boundaries and sample dimensions on the mechanical behavior of Ag nanowires

Hu Zhao et al.

Summary: The study compares the tensile mechanical properties of silver nanowires produced by different methods and finds a significant size effect in the plastic flow strengths of both sets of nanowires, where smaller diameters result in higher strengths. Similar deformation structures and low dislocation densities were observed in both classes of nanowires studied.

In situ atomic-scale observation of dislocation behaviors in twin-structured Pt nanocrystals

YiZhong Guo et al.

Summary: This study observed the atomic-scale deformation process of twin-structured Pt nanocrystals in a high-resolution transmission electron microscope, revealing that plastic deformation is controlled by full dislocation and Lomer dislocation (LD) lock formation, with dislocations moving towards the nanocrystal surface after LD locks are destructed. The ultra-high repulsive force of the twin boundary prevents dislocation-TB reactions during deformation, enriching our understanding of dislocation behaviors in twin-structured nanocrystals.

In-situ TEM study of crack propagation in crystal thinning area and crystal rotation at crack tip in Al

Kang Yan et al.

Summary: In-situ tension test in a transmission electron microscope was used to study the fracture process of aluminium, finding that multiple Frank-Read dislocation sources are formed in the crystal thinning area at the front of the crack, leading to the nucleation of nanocracks. Continuous perfect dislocations emitted from the crack tip slip, decompose, and form twin boundaries, with residual dislocations forming dislocation walls and stacking faults, ultimately causing slip at the twin boundary.

Light, strong, and stable nanoporous aluminum with native oxide shell

Wei Yang et al.

Summary: The native aluminum oxide shell on porous aluminum can stabilize and strengthen the material when the ligament size is decreased to the submicron or nanometer scale. This nanoporous Al-Al2O3 core-shell composite is nonflammable and stable at near melting temperatures. It is stronger and lighter than conventional foams of similar density, showing great potential for various functional and structural applications.
