Free volume formation and the high strength of pure Mg after room temperature core-sheath ECAP passes

Ali Heydarinia et al.

Summary: This study successfully deformed pure Mg at room temperature using the core-sheath configuration and equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) method, achieving samples with excellent mechanical properties. After 4 passes of ECAP, the microstructure of the samples changed, with an average grain size of about 0.3 μm and an excess free volume. The results also showed that the local temperature increase during the ECAP process resulted in dynamic recovery and recrystallization of the microstructure during deformation. Texture analysis revealed that the first pass activated non-basal sliding systems, while 4 passes resulted in a relatively strong (0002) fiber texture.

Enhancement of strength-ductility synergy in ultrafine-grained Cu-Zn alloy prepared by ECAP and subsequent annealing

Jianqing Chen et al.

Summary: A homogeneously ultrafine-grained (UFG) Cu-38 Zn alloy with an average grain size of 0.64 μm was successfully fabricated by equal channel angular processing (ECAP), exhibiting a significantly enhanced strength-ductility synergy. The observed strength enhancement can be attributed to grain refinement and dislocation strengthening. After annealing, the alloy showed further improved strength with almost unchanged ductility, which is associated with solute/impurity segregation and precipitation phenomena inside the grains.

Fracture locus characteristics of Al alloy 5083 processed by equal channel angular pressing using miniaturized specimens

Daniel Melzer et al.

Summary: The study presents a comprehensive plasticity analysis applied to aluminum alloy after severe plastic deformation (SPD) processing, showing that plasticity strength strongly depends on a combination of stress triaxiality and Lode angle parameter. Materials after ECAP processing exhibit slightly higher values in the fracture locus of equivalent strain to fracture. This approach allows for estimating the ultimate plasticity of materials after ECAP processing and predicting fractures in plastic deformation processes.

The economics of additive manufacturing: Towards a general cost model including process failure

Jin Ding et al.

Summary: Research on the cost of Additive Manufacturing is crucial, considering ancillary processes, process efficiency, capacity utilization, and the expected impact of ill-structured costs such as process failure and product rejection. A new cost model has been developed to represent the probability and expected cost effect of failure events, providing insights into achievable unit cost levels and the cost effect of process failure.

A review on wire and arc additive manufacturing of titanium alloy

Zidong Lin et al.

Summary: Wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is an economic and efficient technology suitable for producing large-scale metallic components, particularly in the fabrication of near-net-shape and large-scale titanium alloys. It has been significantly noticed and adopted due to its high deposition rate, low machinery cost, and shortened lead time compared to other powder-based additive manufacturing techniques.

Grain-refining and strengthening mechanisms of bulk ultrafine grained CP-Ti processed by L-ECAP and MDF

Peng-Cheng Zhao et al.

Summary: The microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of ultrafine-grained CP-Ti were systematically examined after large-volume equal channel angular pressing (L-ECAP) and multi-directional forging (MDF). The grain size distribution conformed to lognormal distribution, with iron impurities promoting recrystallization during L-ECAP. The strain hardening rate of CP-Ti increased with decreasing grain size, while the continuous strain hardening ability decreased.

Fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth rate properties of AM repaired Ti-6Al-4V by Direct Energy Deposition

Sulochana Shrestha et al.

Summary: The fracture toughness (K-IC) and fatigue crack growth (FCGR) properties of Ti-6Al-4V repaired through Direct Energy Deposition (DED) additive manufacturing process were investigated and tested according to ASTM standards. Monitoring of crack growth was done using Direct current potential drop (DCPD) and mouth opening displacement was calculated using Digital Image Correlation (DIC). Evaluation of crack growth path and fracture surface was conducted using optical and scanning electron microscopy to understand the failure mechanism in detail, with a discussion on the relation between measured properties and microstructure effects.

Ali Hosseinzadeh et al.

Summary: This study investigated the novel combination of multi-pass ECAE/P and SLM for the first time. The mechanical properties of AlSi12 were significantly improved after ECAP treatment due to effective grain refinement and persistent silicon phase network. The results suggest that ECAP can be utilized as a post-processing tool to enhance the mechanical properties of laser powder bed fused microstructures.
