Spalling behaviour of concrete made with recycled concrete aggregates

Bruno Fernandes et al.

Summary: Concrete made with recycled aggregates (RCA) has specific properties and a higher risk of spalling under fire conditions compared to concrete made with natural aggregates (NA). Increasing the replacement rate of recycled coarse aggregates in concrete leads to a higher spalling degree up to a certain point, beyond which further increase in replacement rate does not result in higher spalling. The use of RCA also alters the physical properties of concrete, particularly water content, which can trigger spalling.

Effect of elevated temperatures on the residual durability-related performance of concrete

Andre Valente Monteiro et al.

Summary: High temperatures can have a more detrimental effect on the durability of concrete than on its mechanical performance. Major losses in durability-related performance may occur at temperatures considerably lower than the established limiting temperature for distinguishing fire-damaged concrete. It is suggested that the temperature for this distinction should be set between 100 and 200 degrees Celsius. UPV tests using exponential transducers show suitable sensitivity to detect losses in durability-related performance in concrete damaged by heat. Inspections using UPV tests should be conducted on water-saturated specimens with multiple readings to identify fire-damaged concrete in single cores drilled from structures.

Effect of elevated temperatures on concrete made with recycled concrete aggregates - An overview

Bruno Fernandes et al.

Summary: The use of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) has been proven as a good solution for sustainable concrete production, but its performance at high temperatures is critical for building structures. This paper reviews and discusses the mechanical and thermal properties of concrete made with RCA at high temperatures to identify future research needs.

Investigation on water absorption in concrete after subjected to compressive fatigue loading

Licheng Wang et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the influence of fatigue loading on the water movement behavior in reinforced concrete structures and found that residual strain and cumulative water content increase with the increase of stress level and loading cycles. The initial and secondary sorptivities also increase dramatically with stress level and loading cycles due to the development of cumulative pore volume in concrete.
