Indentation strain rate sensitivity of laser-powder bed fused and electron beam melted Ti-6Al-4V

Harish Chandra Kaushik et al.

Summary: This study investigated the indentation hardness (H-in) and strain rate sensitivity (SRS) of additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) alloys fabricated through laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) and electron beam melting (EBM). It was found that the L-PBF alloy exhibited higher hardness values, while the EBM alloy showed higher strain rate sensitivity due to the rotation of alpha-prismatic planes along the building direction.

Indentation-derived mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V: Laser-powder bed fusion versus electron beam melting

Amir Hadadzadeh et al.

Summary: By employing depth-sensing indentation testing technique, the mechanical properties of Ti-6Al4V alloy fabricated through different additive manufacturing processes were studied. It was found that the L-PBF alloy exhibited higher nanohardness and reduced elastic modulus values due to its finer microstructure compared to the EBM material.

Dynamic Multicontrast X-Ray Imaging Method Applied to Additive Manufacturing

Lorenzo Massimi et al.

Summary: The dynamic implementation of beam-tracking x-ray imaging method offers absorption, phase, and ultrasmall angle scattering signals with microscopic resolution and high frame rate, allowing for capturing dynamic processes with detailed information on melting of metals. The availability of three contrast channels enables earlier segmentation of droplets, tracking of powder dynamic, and estimation of unfused powder amounts, demonstrating the method's ability to provide additional information on melting processes.

Coarsening of martensite with multiple generations of twins in laser additively manufactured Ti6Al4V

Mangesh Pantawane et al.

Summary: This study used finite element analysis and experimental observations to reveal the evolution of martensite structure in Ti6Al4V during LPBF-AM process. The martensite in water-quenched samples was thinner compared to LPBF-AM Ti6Al4V, and it gradually coarsened and distorted after laser treatments. Multiple generations of crystallographic twins were also detected in LPBF-Ti6Al4V, which were not common in water-quenched wrought Ti6Al4V.

High speed synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments resolve microstructure and phase transformation in laser processed Ti-6Al-4V

Seunghee A. Oh et al.

Summary: The microstructures of Ti-6Al-4V following laser processing depend primarily on the phase transformation of beta to alpha, with cooling rates inferred to be a key factor in determining the transformation threshold. High-speed synchrotron X-ray diffraction has revealed a new threshold between martensitic and diffusional phase transformation in Ti-6Al-4V occurring at higher cooling rates than previously reported.
