Transformation textures in Ni rich NiTi shape memory alloy

K. N. Chaithanya Kumar et al.

Summary: The in-situ deformation of Ni rich NiTi shape memory alloy was characterized using synchrotron diffraction. The study found that applied stress affects the texture of material and restricts the stress induced martensitic transformation. A strong lattice correspondence between the austenite and martensite phases along with a strong variant selection was observed.

Revealing the mode and strain of reversible twinning in B19 ' martensite by in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction

Yuxuan Chen et al.

Summary: This report investigates the reversible twinning in B19 ' martensite in a Nb-nanowire/NiTiFe-matrix alloy. The study achieves a twinning strain of up to 5.1% by pre-deforming the alloy. In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction results reveal the generation of reversible twins, and the measured twinning strain clarifies the contribution of reversible twinning to twinning induced elasticity (TIE).

Evolution of martensitic microstructures in nanocrystalline NiTi wires deformed in tension

Orsolya Molnarova et al.

Summary: An experimental method is introduced for reconstructing martensite variant microstructures in nanocrystalline NiTi wire. It was found that the martensitic microstructures in the wire transform to different states upon loading and unloading, leading to characteristic microstructures with recoverable and unrecovered strains. The study also shows that the plastic deformation of oriented martensite proceeds by coordinated deformation twinning and dislocation slip, resulting in a refinement of the austenitic microstructure.

Effect of microstructure on fatigue of superelastic NiTi wires

Ondrej Tyc et al.

Summary: The superelastic fatigue tests of NiTi wires with different nanocrystalline microstructures showed that wires with smaller grains had shorter fatigue life. The dependency of fatigue life on microstructure and test temperature may be rationalized by considering the shielding effect of plastic deformation and deformation twinning ahead of advancing fatigue cracks. Increasing test temperature led to a decrease in fatigue life.

Deformation infrared calorimetry for materials characterization applied to study cyclic superelasticity in NiTi wires

Eduardo Alarcon et al.

Summary: This article introduces the Deformation Infrared Calorimetry (DIRC) technique for resolving spatial distributions of heat and work in samples subjected to uniaxial loading under isothermal conditions, computed from synchronized temperature and strain fields obtained by infrared thermography (IRT) and digital image correlation (DIC). It demonstrates the relevance and usage of DIRC by characterizing the cyclic evolution of the thermomechanical response, particularly in the context of functional fatigue of a superelastic NiTi wire. Further postprocessing of DIRC data allows for the association of functional fatigue with the evolution of martensite production/recovery and energy storage/dissipation during stress-induced martensitic transformations (SIMTs) shear-bands propagation.
