Impact of oxygen content on the thermal stability of Ti-Al-O-N coatings based on computational and experimental studies

Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of O-addition on Ti1-xAlxN coatings was investigated. It was found that the incorporation of oxygen did not affect the hardness of the films in their as-deposited state, but it increased the peak hardness after annealing. First-principles calculations revealed that oxygen retards thermal decomposition by increasing diffusion activation energy for Al diffusion.

A mechanistic approach of oxidation resistance, structural and mechanical behaviour of TiAlN coatings

Loris Chavee et al.

Summary: This study fills the knowledge gap regarding the structural behavior and oxidation mechanisms of TixAl1-xN coatings annealed for extended duration. The results demonstrate that the oxidation mechanisms are independent of the annealing process and time, and occur separately from the structural changes.

Enhanced thermal stability of (Ti,Al)N coatings by oxygen incorporation

Damian M. Holzapfel et al.

Summary: The study explored the impact of oxygen incorporation on the thermal stability of (Ti,Al)N coatings, revealing that oxygen incorporation can enhance the thermal stability of (Ti,Al)(O,N) coatings, causing a delay in the formation of the wurtzite phase and requiring higher temperatures for the formation and growth of the wurtzite phase.

Effect of nitrogen vacancies on the growth, dislocation structure, and decomposition of single crystal epitaxial (Ti1-xAlx)Ny thin films

K. M. Calamba et al.

Summary: The research investigates how varying nitrogen vacancies affect the growth, microstructure, spinodal decomposition, and hardness values of predominantly single crystal cubic phase c-(Ti1-xAlx)N-y films. It was found that higher nitrogen vacancies promote phase segregation, while lower nitrogen vacancies result in increased film hardness.
