Simultaneous high strength and mechanical stability of bcc Nb/Mg nanolaminates

Manish Jain et al.

Summary: This work reports on the simultaneous improvements in both strength and mechanical stability of Nb/Mg nanolaminates with decreasing layer thicknesses, a trend seldom reported in nanolaminates consisting of pure metals. The presence of a body-centered cubic (bcc) Mg pseudomorphic phase in the nanolaminates results in an increase in strength by over 60% and an increase in strain to failure by over 80% compared to nanolaminates containing a hexagonal close-packed (hcp) Mg phase. The hcp-to-bcc phase transition in Mg leads to a renewed strengthening regime in the nanolaminate and an increase in strain-to-failure due to the change in interface coherence and the introduction of a more plastically isotropic bcc material.

Quantifying the Uncertainty of Critical Resolved Shear Stress Values Derived from Nano-Indentation in Hexagonal Ti Alloys

Z. Zhao et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the inverse indentation analysis (IIA) method using measured data and demonstrates its ability to extract initial critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) values. The uncertainties in surface topography and load-depth response are quantified and compared. It is found that surface topography uncertainties are larger than those of the load-depth response. Upscaling shallow indentation simulations can accelerate optimization to a certain degree. However, the physical interpretation of identified CRSS values needs to account for the effect of limited indentation depth.

Material mechanisms of Cu/Ni nanolaminate coatings resulting in lifetime extensions of welded joints

Jakob Brunow et al.

Summary: Metal nanolaminate coatings are a promising approach in post-weld treatment methods, as they can significantly extend the lifetime of welded joints. The fatigue behavior of Cu/Ni multilayers is influenced by the nanostructure.

Kink mechanism in Cu/Nb nanolaminates explored by in situ pillar compression

Yifan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the formation process and mechanism of kink band (KB) in Cu/Nb nano metallic laminates (NMLs). It is found that the inhomogeneous microstructure plays a key role in the formation of KB, leading to the accumulation of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) and the formation of tilt geometrically necessary boundaries (GNBs) near KB boundaries (KBBs). Furthermore, once the layer-parallel slip systems are activated, preexisting lattice dislocations and dislocations nucleating from interfaces will accumulate as GNDs near KBBs, promoting the evolution of KB.

Effect of deposition substrates on surface topography, interface roughness and phase transformation of the Al/Ni multilayers

Binbin Liu et al.

Summary: The surface topography, interface roughness, and phase transformation of Al/Ni multilayers are strongly dependent on the substrates, with substrate roughness significantly affecting interface roughness and phase transformation behavior. Substrates can influence the intermixing region at interfaces and may provide advantages for tailoring the performance of multilayers.
