Recent advances in systemic therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma

Huajun Zhang et al.

Summary: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common and lethal malignancy worldwide. While therapeutic options for advanced HCC are limited, sorafenib has been the only proven effective systemic drug for more than a decade. However, the rapid progress of molecular targeted therapies in the past three years has significantly changed the treatment landscape for advanced HCC. The incorporation of immune checkpoint therapies and their combination with molecular targeted therapy are emerging tools to enhance the immune response.

Solidification of heavy metals in lead smelting slag and development of cementitious materials

Zhongzhong Zhao et al.

Summary: This study explores the effects of different particle sizes of lead smelting slag (LSS) on the compressive strength of cementitious materials. The results show that decreasing the particle size can significantly improve the compressive strength of the materials, especially in the early stage. Analysis of LSS with different particle sizes reveals that decreasing the particle size increases the specific surface areas and decreases the degree of crystallinity. Microscopic analysis of the cementitious materials indicates that decreasing the particle size enhances the degree of reaction and gelation, resulting in a denser structure.

A seed germination-inspired interface polarization augmentation strategy toward superior electromagnetic absorption performance

Zirui Jia et al.

Summary: Dielectric/magnetic composites are attractive candidates for high-performance electromagnetic wave absorption materials. However, the agglomeration of magnetic nanoparticles in the carbon matrix is a common issue. This study employed a high-temperature carbon nanotube method inspired by seed germination to prevent agglomeration and reinforce interfacial polarization. The resulting composites exhibited strong electromagnetic attenuation ability compared to composites with agglomerated magnetic nanoparticles.

Photodynamic therapy synergizes with PD-L1 checkpoint blockade for immunotherapy of CRC by multifunctional nanoparticles

Zeting Yuan et al.

Summary: Recent studies show that photodynamic therapy (PDT) can enhance the therapeutic effects of PD-L1 blockade in colorectal cancer (CRC) by inducing tumor cell death, stimulating immune response, and preventing tumor recurrence through upregulation of PD-L1 expression via the hypoxia-inducible factor 1a (HIF-1a) signaling pathway. This combination therapy using multifunctional nanoparticles loaded with photosensitized mTHPC (mTHPC@VeC/T-RGD NPs) shows promise in improving the response rate of anti-PD-L1 checkpoint blockade immunotherapies in CRC.
