Management of Hypercholesterolemia Through Dietary ss-glucans-Insights From a Zebrafish Model

Adnan Hussain Gora et al.

Summary: This study compared the cholesterol-lowering potential of two beta-glucans with different molecular branching patterns and a cholesterol-lowering drug. The results showed that both beta-glucans and the drug significantly suppressed the increase in plasma cholesterol levels and alleviated endoplasmic reticulum-related effects induced by dietary cholesterol. Moreover, the beta-glucans elicited distinct transcriptomic changes in the intestine, impacting processes such as fatty acid metabolism, protein catabolic processes, and nuclear division. The study provides insights into the effectiveness of different beta-glucans in alleviating dysfunctions in lipid metabolism caused by dietary cholesterol.

Vitamin E and carotenoid profiles in leaves, stems, petioles and flowers of stinging nettle (Urtica leptophylla Kunth) from Costa Rica

Alexander Montoya-Arroyo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the vitamin E and carotenoid content of different plant structures of wild Costa Rican U. leptophylla. The results showed that the leaves of U. leptophylla had the highest nutritional value and could potentially be a source of alpha-tocopherol, lutein, and beta-carotene.

Summary: This study found that serum concentrations of alpha-tocopherol and lycopene were significantly lower in patients with knee osteoarthritis compared to healthy controls. Additionally, there was a significant negative association between serum concentration and dietary intake of these nutrients with functional disability in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

Fucoxanthin from microalgae Phaeodactylum tricornutum inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokines by regulating both NF-kappa B and NLRP3 inflammasome activation

A-Hyeon Lee et al.

Summary: Pro-inflammatory cytokines are produced and secreted through the activation of NF-kappa B and NLRP3 inflammasome signaling pathways. Fucoxanthin, found in Phaeodactylum tricornutum extracts, has been shown to inhibit the activation of these pathways and decrease the production of major pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Algae as a Source of Natural Flavors in Innovative Foods

Nellie Francezon et al.

Summary: Algae have been used as a food resource for centuries due to their nutritive values, and there is a growing interest in using them as enrichment ingredients in food products. The aromas of algae, including sulfur compounds, halogenated components, fatty acid derivatives, and terpenoids, play a significant role in the acceptance of food products by consumers. Studies have been conducted to explore the aromas of algae and their impact on food, as well as their evolution through processing and their potential to produce selected aromas using biotechnology in the food industry.

Immune Status and Hepatic Antioxidant Capacity of Gilthead Seabream Sparus aurata Juveniles Fed Yeast and Microalga Derived β-glucans

Bruno Reis et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation with beta-glucans from yeast and microalga on gene expression, oxidative stress biomarkers, and plasma immune parameters in gilthead seabream juveniles. The results suggest that a P. tricornutum 37% enriched-beta-glucans extract may serve as a counter-measure in the context of gut inflammation, due to its immune-tolerant and anti-oxidative effects.

Oral Bioavailability of Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Carotenoids from the Microalgae Phaeodactylum tricornutum in Healthy Young Adults

Lena Stiefvatter et al.

Summary: The microalgae Phaeodactylum tricornutum (PT) is a valuable source of nutrients such as proteins, polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids (n-3 PUFA), particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), carotenoids like fucoxanthin (FX), and beta-glucans. Intake of PT leads to an increase in n-3 PUFA and EPA levels, while also decreasing the n-6:n-3 ratio in plasma. The study shows that PT is a safe and effective source of EPA and other nutrients, suggesting its potential as a sustainable food source.
