Hae Min Kim et al.

Summary: This study reports the use of side-chain-type s-PDTP copolymers as ionomers and membranes for anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). These copolymers exhibit high alkaline stability, excellent micromorphology, and high OH- conductivity. The ionomers with moderate ion-exchange-capacity and rational water uptake show optimal AEMFC performance.

Exploring highly soluble ether-free polybenzimidazole as anion exchange membranes with long term durability

Maolian Guo et al.

Summary: A series of ether-free polybenzimidazoles (PBIs) were synthesized as anion exchange membranes (AEMs). The PBIs showed improved solubility and exhibited both high anionic conductivity and alkaline stability. These materials could improve the phase interface between catalyst and AEMs and showed excellent oxidation stability in Fenton's reagent. Furthermore, the H2-O2 fuel cell using the PBIs as membrane achieved high open circuit voltage and peak power density.

High-performance tetracyclic aromatic anion exchange membranes containing twisted binaphthyl for fuel cells

Wei Ting Gao et al.

Summary: Introducing bulky twisted binaphthyl units into the backbones of anion exchange membranes enhances both conductivity and stability, leading to well-defined microphase separation and well-developed ion-conductive highways. The performance of poly(binaphthyl piperidinium)-based AEMs demonstrates significantly higher OH- conductivity and excellent retention in harsh alkaline environments compared to traditional AEMs.

Poly(arylene piperidine) Anion Exchange Membranes with Tunable N-Alicyclic Quaternary Ammonium Side Chains

Dong Pan et al.

Summary: To develop anion exchange membranes with high chemical stability and hydroxide conductivity, poly(arylene piperidine)s carrying mono- or dicationic side chains were synthesized. Series 1 AEMs showed excellent alkaline stability and high hydroxide conductivity, suitable for harsh alkaline conditions, while series 2 AEMs exhibited higher conductivity under moderate water uptake but were more vulnerable to hydroxide attack.

Preparation and characterization of side-chain poly(aryl ether ketone) anion exchange membranes by superacid-catalyzed reaction

Ziqin Li et al.

Summary: In this study, poly(aryl ether ketone) with spatial cardo structure was prepared via a facile polyhydroxyalkylation reaction catalyzed by superacid, leading to the synthesis of three different anion exchange membranes. Among them, the N-methyl-piperidine based anion exchange membrane exhibited the highest OH- conductivity. The membranes also demonstrated excellent mechanical properties and good alkaline stability, with conductivities decreasing by less than 5% after treatment with 1 M KOH at 60 degrees C for 600 hours.

Progress in High-Performance Anion Exchange Membranes Based on the Design of Stable Cations for Alkaline Fuel Cells

Zhengwang Tao et al.

Summary: Solid alkaline fuel cells with anion exchange membranes (AEMs) have been a focus in renewable energy cells due to their high electrode activity, potential for non-precious metal catalysts, and lower fuel purity requirements. The past decade has seen significant progress in AEM designs, with various cationic structures being explored, though challenges remain in improving hydroxide conductivity and durability. Future research directions include addressing these challenges.
