Contribution of surface silanization process on mechanical characteristics of TPU-based composites involving feldspar and quartz minerals

Hajar Bouzmane et al.

Summary: In this study, quartz and feldspar powders were surface treated using a silane coupling agent to improve their compatibility with the polymer matrix. The effects of surface treatments on the mechanical and thermo-mechanical properties of TPU-based composites were investigated. Results showed that the enrichment of quartz and feldspar surfaces improved the performance of the composites, with quartz exhibiting slightly higher performance due to its silica-rich composition. The silane layer on the mineral surface also acted as a barrier to water uptake of the composites.

Multi-stimuli responsive shape memory behavior of dual-switch TPU/CB/CNC hybrid nanocomposites as triggered by heat, water, ethanol, and pH

Guanzheng Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/carbomer (CB)/nano-cellulose (CNCs) multi-responsive shape-memory nanocomposite films were prepared using CNCs as a crosslinker. The mechanical properties of the films were found to be optimized at a CNCs loading of 5 wt%. Various characterization techniques were used to elucidate the chemistry and microstructure of the nanocomposite films, confirming the reaction between TPU and CB. The shape-memory properties of the films were investigated under different conditions, and the pH was found to affect the shape recovery behavior. The nanocomposite films showed multi-responsive capability against water, ethanol, pH, and heat, indicating their potential in various applications.

Ion transport through layered hydrogels for low-frequency energy harvesting toward self-powered chemical systems

Merreta Noorenza Biutty et al.

Summary: An ionic energy harvester based on polymer hydrogels was developed to collect low-frequency mechanical vibrations. The hydrogels allowed the transport and separation of ions, generating an electric potential difference and converting mechanical energy into electricity. The optimized hydrogel devices exhibited high voltage and current density, and energy generation was demonstrated through implanting them into a metal precursor solution and shoes. This study provides a blueprint for the future development of hydrogel-based ionic energy harvesters as soft and flexible power sources.
