Original Crystal Structures of Even-Even Polyamides Made of Pleated and Rippled Sheets

Bernard Lotz

Summary: The crystal structures of even-even polyamides are based on twisted conformations and resemble the pleated and rippled protein sheet structures introduced by Pauling and Corey. These structures are chiral and composed of two conformational isomers. They are entropically favored high-temperature crystal forms of nylons and may provide a new pathway for the analysis of rare crystal morphologies produced at high temperatures.

Shear-induced crystallization of polyamide 11

Katalee Jariyavidyanont et al.

Summary: The study reveals that shearing at different rates significantly affects the formation of crystal nuclei in PA 11, with a critical shear rate identified at 1 to 2 s(-1). Higher shear rates result in increased number of nuclei and crystal growth, with crystals oriented parallel to the flow direction. Optical microscopy confirms the formation of long fibrillar structures after shearing at such conditions.

The Brill Transition in Long-Chain Aliphatic Polyamide 1012: The Role of Hydrogen-Bonding Organization

Yu Wang et al.

Summary: The effect of hydrogen-bond organization on the Brill transition of long-chain polyamide 1012 was investigated, showing a significant linear decrease in T-B values of T270 samples with decreasing CPI, while T-B values of T210 samples remained constant. Quenched samples by liquid nitrogen were found to be in the gamma-phase at ambient temperature, and the T-B gap between T210 and T270 samples was attributed to the content of randomly distributed H-bonds.

A Fresh Look at the Structures of Nylons and the Brill Transition

Bernard Lotz

Summary: The common knowledge of nylon crystal structures dates back to the early 1950s, with the description of alpha phase and Brill transition. Recent structural analyses have provided new insights into these long-standing structural puzzles, revealing variants featuring pleated chain conformations and a dynamic interconversion mechanism for the Brill transition.
