Usefulness of Cytokine Gene Polymorphisms for the Therapeutic Choice in Japanese Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis

Saki Tsujimoto et al.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between polymorphisms in cytokine-encoding genes, autoantibodies, and therapeutic responses in Japanese RA patients. The results showed that polymorphisms in IL-10 and IFN-gamma genes were associated with the disease in patients. Analyzing these gene polymorphisms may be useful in selecting treatment for Japanese RA patients.

Association Between the Interferon-γ+874 T/A Polymorphism and the Risk and Clinical Manifestations of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: A Preliminary Study

Shanshan Liu et al.

Summary: The IFN-gamma +874 T/A polymorphism is associated with the risk and clinical manifestations of SLE in the Chinese Han population, particularly among females. This polymorphism is linked to SLE clinical manifestations such as lupus nephritis, proteinuria, anti-dsDNA antibodies, anti-Sm antibodies, etc. Furthermore, a meta-analysis suggests that this polymorphism is also associated with the risk of SLE, particularly among Asians.

Global epidemiology of systemic lupus erythematosus

Megan R. W. Barber et al.

Summary: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that predominantly affects young women, with certain ethnic groups experiencing higher vulnerability and mortality rates. Global incidence and prevalence of SLE vary widely due to differences in population, environment, and socioeconomic factors. Inconsistent reporting is also influenced by variations in study design and case definitions.

The Prevalence of Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Systematic Review of Population-based Studies

Khalid B. Almutairi et al.

Summary: The prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis varies widely based on population and data collection methods, with an average point prevalence of 51 in 10,000 and average period prevalence of 56 in 10,000. Urban settings tend to have higher RA prevalence than rural areas, potentially due to differences in healthcare access or risk environment. Studies using population databases and validated diagnoses by rheumatologists are more consistent in estimating RA prevalence.

The global prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis: a meta-analysis based on a systematic review

Khalid Almutairi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the global population prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) from 1980 to 2019 and found a global RA prevalence estimate of 0.46%, with variations due to geographical location and study methodology. The highest RA prevalence (0.69%) was derived from studies involving linked data sources.
