Dissolved organic carbon affects the occurrence of deep chlorophyll peaks and zooplankton resource use and biomass

Joseph A. Tonin et al.

Summary: Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) are increasing in lakes worldwide, which has significant effects on zooplankton. Deep chlorophyll maxima (DCMs) occur in lakes with lower DOC concentrations and provide an important resource for zooplankton. The increase in DOC can suppress zooplankton by affecting both resource quality and the availability of metalimnetic phytoplankton resources.

Lowered nutritional quality of plankton caused by global environmental changes

Danny C. P. Lau et al.

Summary: Global environmental changes in high-latitude northern lakes are causing widespread nutrient depletion, changes in the ratio of dissolved inorganic nitrogen to total phosphorus, increases in water temperature, and the browning of water. These changes are affecting the nutrient limitation regime, biomass of phytoplankton, and the nutritional quality of the pelagic food web components. Data from lakes in Sweden showed that DIN:TP ratio, water temperature, and browning have significant impacts on the PUFA contents in seston and zooplankton.

Elevated organic carbon pulses persist in estuarine environment after major storm events

Eero Asmala et al.

Summary: Estuaries play a crucial role in regulating the transport of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from land to ocean. The impact of tropical cyclones on terrestrial DOC in estuaries can overwhelm the abiotic and biotic degradation capacity, leading to an enhanced shunt of terrestrial carbon to the coastal ocean.
