Time-Dependent Pinning of Nanoblisters Confined by Two-Dimensional Sheets. Part 1: Scaling Law and Hydrostatic Pressure

Chengfu Ma et al.

Summary: Understanding the mechanics of blisters is crucial in the study of 2D materials and elastic wetting. In this two-part work, the morphology characteristics and hydrostatic pressures of nanoscale blisters confined between a 2D elastic sheet and its substrate are investigated using AFM measurements and theoretical analysis. The results show that the morphology is influenced by the elasticity of the capping sheet, adhesion between the capping sheet and substrate, and interfacial tensions. A universal scaling law is observed, and the hydrostatic pressures can be estimated from the morphology characteristics.

Open Problems in Wetting Phenomena: Pinning Retention Forces

Rafael Tadmor

Summary: This study reviews existing explanations for drop pinning and depinning, discussing the advantages and disadvantages of various theories and their applicability to different experimental systems. It also describes force laws that can be deduced from these theories and the physical meaning extracted from retention force measurements.

Elastic wetting: Substrate-supported droplets confined by soft elastic membranes

Yifan Rao et al.

Summary: Elastic wetting refers to the phenomenon where micro- or nano-scale droplets are covered by an ultrasoft elastic membrane, with examples including cell blebs and 2D material bubbles. This study investigates the equilibrium of elastic wetting, showing that the pressure across the membrane/droplet interface can be described by a superposition of the Young-Laplace equation and the nonlinear membrane equation. Nonlinear elasticity, geometric nonlinearity, surface tension, and membrane-substrate adhesion combine at the contact line to produce a variety of membrane-confined droplet configurations.

Elastocapillary cleaning of twisted bilayer graphene interfaces

Yuan Hou et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that nanopockets in vdW materials can coalesce spontaneously into larger spaces which can be easily cleaned through mechanical methods, and that bilayer graphene interfaces exhibit excellent self-renewal phenomena in terms of moire patterns recovery after motion of contaminants.
