Long-term extreme response of an offshore turbine: How accurate are contour-based estimates?

Andreas F. Haselsteiner et al.

Summary: The study found that the environmental contour method currently recommended in the IEC design standard for offshore wind turbines can significantly underestimate the 50-year return value of response variables, mainly due to the method used to construct the contour, neglecting serial correlation in environmental conditions, and neglecting the short-term variability in the response.

Comparison of environmental contour and response-based approaches for system reliability analysis of floating structures

Yuliang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of environmental conditions on short-term extreme response parameters of floating structures and conducted numerical simulations to establish a reliable database for further analysis. The use of surrogate models allowed for design load estimations, full long-term extreme response distribution calculation, and system reliability analysis. A simplified long-term analysis based on EC-based design loads was proposed, providing a means of preliminary design evaluation of floating structures.

Fast simulation of fully non-stationary wind fields using a new matrix factorization assisted interpolation method

Yan Jiang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new matrix factorization assisted interpolation method for simulating non-stationary wind fields. By using an improved interpolation scheme and monotone projected Barzilai-Borwein based non-negative matrix factorization (MPBB-NMF), the proposed method reduces the computational demand and shows superior effectiveness in numerical simulations.

Armin Tabandeh et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the mathematical foundation of importance sampling technique and discusses two general classes of methods for constructing the importance sampling density for reliability analysis. It explains the failure probability estimator, statistical properties, and computational complexity of the importance sampling technique. The paper explores and compares the performance of two classes of importance sampling methods using benchmark examples, and discusses the challenges and future directions of this technique.

Gaussian process regression for fatigue reliability analysis of offshore wind turbines

David Wilkie et al.

Summary: A computational framework relying on Gaussian process regression to build surrogate models of load-induced fatigue damage for offshore wind turbine (OWT) fatigue reliability analysis has been developed and validated in this study. The proposed approach can reduce the computational effort required to evaluate fatigue limit state (FLS) reliability with high accuracy through application to three plausible offshore wind farm sites in Europe. Further investigations on the sensitivity of various goodness-of-fit metrics to different model assumptions aim to reduce the computational effort required for GP regression/predictions.

Dynamic reliability analysis of a fl oating offshore wind turbine under wind-wave joint excitations via probability density evolution method

Yupeng Song et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the short-term dynamic reliability of a spar-type FOWT using the probability density evolution method (PDEM). A coupled dynamics model for the FOWT was established and the conditional joint probability distribution of significant wave height and peak spectral wave period at the cut-out wind speed was constructed. The stochastic dynamic response and reliability of the FOWT were analyzed using PDEM, showing that the reliability for normal operation is less than 0.2 when the acceleration at the tower top is used as the failure criterion.

Long-term extreme buffeting response of cable-supported bridges with uncertain turbulence parameters

Tor M. Lystad et al.

Summary: The study suggests that the current design practice for wind excited long-span bridges, using short-term extreme response analyses with deterministic turbulence parameters, may significantly underestimate the long-term design stresses. Both the variability of the turbulence parameters and the uncertainty in the short-term extreme response are important factors to consider when estimating design stresses. The comparison between long-term extreme acceleration responses and the measured responses at the Hardanger Bridge shows considerable improvements to the current design practice.

Non-Gaussian Turbulence Induced Buffeting Responses of Long-Span Bridges

Wei Cui et al.

Summary: This study compared the vibrations excited by Gaussian and non-Gaussian turbulence, and found that the bridge response still follows the Gaussian process assumption statistically. However, for the same wind speed, non-Gaussian turbulence leads to larger vibration amplitudes, increasing with turbulence skewness.
