Oxide layer delamination: An energy dissipation mechanism during high-velocity microparticle impacts

Ahmed A. Tiamiyu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the mechanism of oxide breakup on microparticles during impact events, showing that it allows for clean metal-metal contact necessary for metallurgical bonding. The energy cost of oxide delamination is found to be 30% of the energy required to bond the particle to the substrate, with the rest associated with bonding and jetting processes.

Numerical Simulation of the Effect of Particle and Substrate Preheating on Porosity Level and Residual Stress of As-sprayed Ti6Al4V Components

P. Khamsepour et al.

Summary: Cold spray is promising in the aerospace industry for repairing damaged metallic components, but its drawback is the high porosity of sprayed samples. Utilizing high-velocity air fuel (HVAF) technology can increase sample density and particle bonding, but a proper finite-element simulation is needed to understand the effect of particle deformation.

Atomistic study of metallurgical bonding upon the high velocity impact of fcc core-shell particles

L. M. Pereira et al.

Summary: By conducting large scale molecular dynamics simulations, it was found that the breakage of the brittle shell during particle impact led to metal-to-metal contact with the substrate, forming metallic bonds. Particle adhesion required the formation of a minimum amount of metallic bonds, and failure to meet this condition resulted in particle rebounding. Additionally, higher impact velocities resulted in more visible particle deformation and rupture of metallic bonds, ultimately affecting the overall rebounding velocity.

Cold spray particle impact simulation using the Preston-Tonks-Wallace plasticity model

J. M. Schreiber et al.

Summary: In the Cold Spray process, solid powder particles are heated and accelerated to high speeds before impacting the substrate, undergoing plastic deformation and forming a bond. Experimentally determined process parameters are established for each material system. Traditional methods use constitutive equations to predict particle deformation, but require adjustment of parameters based on experimental data and do not account for important impact events.

A Numerical Approach to Study the Oxide Layer Effect on Adhesion in Cold Spray

Saeed Rahmati et al.

Summary: A novel finite element method was proposed in this study to predict the occurrence of localized metallurgical bonding in the cold spray process, taking into account the native oxide layer covering the particles. Experimental data validated the predicted critical velocity and showed consistency between predicted and observed bonding locations. The study also investigated the effects of oxide thickness and impact velocity on particle deposition, with comparisons to experimental data highlighting the model's ability to predict material behavior during deposition.
