Use of fibroin polypeptide from silk processing waste as an effective biosorbent for heavy metal removal

Yifeng Huang et al.

Summary: Silk fibroin extracted from Bombyx mori cocoon was used as a biosorbent to remove Pb2+, CrO42-, Cu2+, and Co2+ from aqueous solutions. The sorption process was found to be physical, spontaneous, and endothermic, with sorption kinetics matching well with the modified pseudo-second-order rate model. The sorption rate constant was largely independent of the initial sorbate concentration, demonstrating the stability and reusability of the fibroin biopolymer for metal capture from water over multiple cycles.

Efficient extraction of Rb+ and Cs+ by a precipitation flotation process with ammonium phosphowolframate as precipitant

Dezhen Fang et al.

Summary: The research investigates the precipitation flotation process for Rb+ and Cs+ extraction using ammonium phosphowolframate and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, achieving an extraction efficiency of almost 100% under optimized conditions. DFT calculations and IGM reveal non-covalent interactions involved in the extraction process, while analysis of the flotation mechanism shows electrostatic attraction as the main force. This method shows great potential for Rb+ and Cs+ separation in salt lake brine treatment.
