Bound state in the continuum in an anisotropic photonic crystal supported by a full-wave phase plate

Pavel S. Pankin et al.

Summary: In this study, we analytically demonstrate the existence of accidental bound states in the continuum (BICs) in a 1D multilayered system, where an anisotropic defect layer is embedded into an anisotropic photonic crystal. By varying one of the system's parameters, these BICs can be transformed into high-Q resonances. Furthermore, the BICs exhibit remarkable robustness, as a true BIC can be recovered by tuning other parameters of the system, leading to tunability of the resonance position.

Parallel trapping of multiple nanoparticles using a quasi-bound state in the continuum mode

Jinzhi Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, an all-dielectric nanotweezer based on a quasi-bound state in the continuum (quasi-BIC) mode is proposed to trap nanoparticles with a radius of 10 nm. This nanotweezer provides a high electric field enhancement and a high quality factor (Q-factor), making it suitable for low laser power trapping of nanoparticles with high stability. Furthermore, the nanotweezer array offers multiple optical hotspots with high field confinement and enhancement, enabling parallel trapping of multiple nanoparticles. This has significant implications for studying biological cells and protein molecules, especially in terms of cell heterogeneity and large-scale parallel analysis of basic drugs.

Moire Quasibound States in the Continuum

Lei Huang et al.

Summary: This study combines the concept of moire structures in twisted bilayer photonic crystal slabs with the notion of bound states in the continuum (BICs) to create a new optical state, referred to as moire quasi-BIC. It demonstrates that this state possesses characteristics of moire flat bands and quasi-BICs. The research also explores the mechanism behind the formation of moire flat bands and shows that decreasing the twist angle can lead to a near-perfect BIC with significantly reduced radiation loss. Additionally, it highlights the advantage of moire quasi-BICs in enhancing second-harmonic generation (SHG) compared to dispersive quasi-BICs.

Summary: The evolution of BIC modes spans various symmetrical and functional mediums, with applications covering pure dielectric and lossy plasmonic BICs. Engineered functional materials combined with pure dielectric mediums provide a promising approach for hybrid-quasi-BIC modes. Additionally, discussions on applications of BIC modes in nonlinear harmonic generation, sensing, imaging, lasing, nanocavities, communication, and photodetection have been explored.

Singular flat bands

Jun-Won Rhim et al.

Summary: Recent progress in studying flat band systems has focused on the fundamental physics of the singularity of the flat band's Bloch wave functions. Flat bands are classified into singular and non-singular categories based on the presence or absence of singularity in their Bloch wave functions, generated by band crossing. Singular flat bands exhibit non-contractible loop states and robust boundary modes with nontrivial real-space topology.
