Viscoelasticity of human descending thoracic aorta in a mock circulatory loop

Giulio Franchini et al.

Summary: In this study, healthy human descending thoracic aortas were tested in a mock circulatory loop to measure their mechanical response to physiological pulsatile pressure and flow. The viscoelastic properties and dynamic stiffness ratio of the aortic segments were investigated, while the shape of the deformed aorta under static and dynamic pressure was measured by image processing. Layer-specific experiments were also conducted to identify the mass density of the aortic tissue.

A mesoscale model for the micromechanical study of gels

Robert J. Wagner et al.

Summary: Gels, comprised of polymer networks swelled by solvent, have wide applicability in various fields and their mechanical properties greatly impact their efficacy. This study introduces a novel mesoscale modeling method that can predict the local and global properties of gels. The model accurately predicts the topology, swelling mechanics, and tensile stress of gels, as well as the mechanical response and failure of PEG-based gels.

Nonlinear vibrations and damping of fractional viscoelastic rectangular plates

Marco Amabili et al.

Summary: This study explores the increase in damping with vibration amplitude and the increase in stiffness with vibration frequency in nonlinear vibrations of rectangular plates. A fractional linear solid model is applied to capture these phenomena and the frequency-dependent nonlinear damping. The results are compared with experimental data, showing good agreement in various aspects of the vibration response.

A poroviscoelasticity model based on effective temperature for water and temperature driven phase transition in hydrogels

Sanhita Das et al.

Summary: This article explores the mechanical response changes in hydrogels due to temperature and moisture-driven phase transitions, proposing a unified framework for modeling the transition and associated mechanical behavior. The model's predictive fidelity is evaluated through numerical solutions and experimental validation, examining the influence of inter-molecular interactions on saturation. The study also showcases the modeling of visco-hyperelastic phase transitions and investigates coupling effects caused by changes in moisture, temperature, loading rates, and prior aging.

Viscoelastic characterization of human descending thoracic aortas under cyclic load

Giulio Franchini et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the nonlinear viscoelastic properties of ex-vivo human descending thoracic aortas by measuring hysteresis loops of physiological amplitude under harmonic strain. The results suggest the necessity of characterizing the viscoelastic material properties of the aorta under physiological conditions, as well as the introduction of improved models that take into account the influence of initial pre-stretch and amplitude of the cyclic load.

Chemo-mechanical modelling of swelling and crosslinking reaction kinetics in alginate hydrogels: A novel theory and its numerical implementation

Aidin Hajikhani et al.

Summary: Hydrogels are mechanically stabilized through induced crosslinking in the polymer network by external agents, but monitoring crosslinking kinetics with sufficient resolution is currently lacking. A new thermodynamically consistent chemo-mechanical model has been proposed to study reactive-diffusive mechanisms in alginate hydrogels, allowing for investigation of hydrogels' behavior and characterization of mechano-chemical properties. The model reveals a two-way coupling between mechanics and chemistry, showing the importance of internal stresses on crosslinking kinetics.
