MicroFE models of porcine vertebrae with induced bone focal lesions: Validation of predicted displacements with digital volume correlation

Marco Palanca et al.

Summary: The study validated the predictions of micro finite element models for local displacement of intact and metastatic vertebrae using experimental Digital Volume Correlation measurements. Results showed that simplified models can predict complex displacement fields in the elastic regime with high reliability, but more complex nonlinear models should be implemented for regions with high deformation beyond yield point.

Temporal and spatial changes in bone mineral content and mechanical properties during breast-cancer bone metastases

Anneke S. K. Verbruggen et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the temporal and spatial changes in nano-mechanical properties and composition of bone tissue during breast cancer metastasis. The results indicate that changes in bone tissue composition occur prior to and following overt metastatic osteolysis, potentially altering the mechanical environment of both the bone and tumor cells.

Type, size, and position of metastatic lesions explain the deformation of the vertebrae under complex loading conditions

Marco Palanca et al.

Summary: This study used a biomechanical approach to evaluate the effect of lesion type, size, and location on the deformation of the metastatic vertebrae. The results showed that lytic metastases had a greater impact on vertebral deformation compared to other types, and the size and location of the lesion were significantly correlated with the strain distribution. The study suggests that these biomechanical parameters should be considered in future clinical guidelines to improve predictive accuracy.

A novel approach to evaluate the effects of artificial bone focal lesion on the three-dimensional strain distributions within the vertebral body

Marco Palanca et al.

Summary: A robust method for evaluating the redistribution of strain due to artificial lesions within the vertebral body was proposed. This method can potentially enhance the current clinical assessment of fracture risk in metastatic spines.
