Shape optimization of orthopedic porous scaffolds to enhance mechanical performance

Ali H. Foroughi et al.

Summary: Polymeric bone scaffolds are designed to bear external mechanical forces and promote cell growth. A new scaffold structure named MFCC, based on FCC arrangement of spherical pores, is introduced to optimize both mechanical and cell growth perspectives. The optimized MFCC scaffolds show improved stiffness and more uniform stress distribution compared to regular OCS scaffolds. The spherical pores with concave surfaces provide a better environment for cell proliferation. The enhancement in stiffness of the scaffold is shape attributed and is independent of the material used.

Analytical model for the prediction of permeability of triply periodic minimal surfaces

Reduan Asbai-Ghoudan et al.

Summary: The main objective of this study was to develop a novel analytical framework for calculating the permeability of Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces (TPMS) structures. The results showed that the permeability of different architectures increased at different rates with porosity, emphasizing the importance of pore distribution and structure. The computed permeability values fit well with the suggested analytical model, indicating the potential for predicting permeability values of TPMS structures based on geometrical parameters.
