Improvement of Mortality Prognostication in Patients With Epidermal Necrolysis The Role of Novel Inflammatory Markers and Proposed Revision of SCORTEN (Re-SCORTEN)

Hui Kai Koh et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers evaluated the association between novel inflammatory markers and in-hospital mortality in epidermal necrolysis patients to assess the additional prognostic value when used in combination with the SCORTEN score. The red cell distribution width to hemoglobin ratio was found to be a significant predictor of in-hospital mortality, and when added to SCORTEN, improved the discrimination and prognostic ability significantly. The study concluded that the composite score including RDW/Hb showed good predictive accuracy and calibration in predicting mortality in epidermal necrolysis patients.

Performance of ABCD-10 and SCORTEN mortality prediction models in a cohort of patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis

Michael J. Duplisea et al.

Summary: The ABCD-10 model was proposed as an alternative to SCORTEN for predicting in-hospital mortality in patients with SJS/TEN, but in a study at a large tertiary burn center, SCORTEN was found to be a better predictor of inpatient mortality. Both models showed good discrimination, but SCORTEN had better calibration for predicting mortality in this patient cohort.
