The Impact of Acne Treatment on Skin Bacterial Microbiota: A Systematic Review

Megan Lam et al.

Summary: The study shows that acne treatment significantly affects the diversity of the skin microbiota, with different treatments leading to inconsistent changes in diversity. Variability in individual microbiome composition and heterogeneity in study sampling techniques may limit quantitative synthesis of results.

The immunomodulatory potential of phage therapy to treat acne: a review on bacterial lysis and immunomodulation

Juan Farfan et al.

Summary: Acne, the most common skin disorder in the world, has an inflammatory pathogenesis, making control of inflammation a target for treatment. Traditional chemical or physical treatments have side effects and antibiotics have developed resistance. Phage therapy, a new immunomodulatory therapy, has been proposed to treat antibiotic-resistant acne.

Summary: Acne is a common global skin disorder with a key inflammatory component, and phage therapy may be an alternative treatment for acne, helping to reduce inflammatory reactions caused by C. acnes.

Tissue expression of IL-17A and FOXP3 in acne vulgaris patients

Azza Gaber Antar Farag et al.

Summary: The study examined the immunohistochemical expression of IL-17A and FOXP3 in acne vulgaris lesions compared to normal skin. Results showed a significant increase in IL-17A expression in epidermis, lymphocytes in papillary dermis, and perifollicular lymphocytic inflammatory infiltrate in acne patients, as well as an elevation in FOXP3 expression in epidermis and lymphocytes in papillary dermis. The correlation between IL-17A and FOXP3 expressions in acne vulgaris patients was not significant, suggesting independent roles in AV development.

Acne vulgaris: role of the immune system

Andrea Bernales Salinas

Summary: Acne vulgaris is a widespread condition with a complex pathophysiology based on four classic principles of the pilosebaceous unit. The immune system plays a key role in the disease process, stimulated by other participants such as P. acnes, AMPs, SGs, MMPs, and other immune pathways.

Cutibacterium acnes as an Opportunistic Pathogen: An Update of Its Virulence-Associated Factors

Summary: Cutibacterium acnes is a member of the skin microbiota that can act as a commensal bacterium as well as an opportunistic pathogen with inflammatory capabilities. It is able to form biofilms, express putative virulence factors, and adapt to its environment.

IL-17+ Mast Cell/T Helper Cell Axis in the Early Stages of Acne

Yoan Eliasse et al.

Summary: Acne is a multifactorial disease driven by physiological changes in the pilosebaceous unit during puberty. Mast cells are shown to be the main IL-17 producers in the early stages of acne, highlighting the importance of targeting the IL-17(+) mast cell/T helper cell axis in therapeutic approaches.

Skin Microbiota in Non-inflammatory and Inflammatory Lesions of Acne Vulgaris: The Underlying Changes within the Pilosebaceous Unit

Xiaoxi Xu et al.

Summary: This study found that male participants, those with higher body mass index, and younger participants carried a higher proportion of Malassezia in their non-inflammatory lesions. The non-inflammatory group showed increased abundance of Malassezia restricta and Cutibacterium acnes, suggesting their involvement in the microecological balance within the pilosebaceous unit. Correlation analysis revealed similarities in proliferation trends of Staphylococcus epidermidis and M. restricta with C. acnes during the transformation from non-inflammatory to inflammatory lesions.
