Ionic Conductivity of Nanocrystalline and Amorphous Li10GeP2S12: The Detrimental Impact of Local Disorder on Ion Transport

Lukas Schweiger et al.

Summary: Solids with high Li+ dynamics are crucial for high performance all-solid-state batteries. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest that introducing local disorder can enhance the ionic conductivity of LGPS. However, experimental evidence shows that ball-milling has a negative impact on Li+ ion transport in LGPS.

Li2CO3/LiF-Rich Heterostructured Solid Electrolyte Interphase with Superior Lithiophilic and Li+-Transferred Characteristics via Adjusting Electrolyte Additives

Daxiong Wu et al.

Summary: This study successfully realizes a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) with the properties of Li2CO3-rich and LiF-rich types by using different fluorine phenylphospines. The SEI formed in the presence of tris(4-fluorophenyl)phosphine (TFPP) has a balanced Li+ transport kinetics, good electron insulator capability, and strong affinity toward Li+. It effectively guarantees fast and uniform Li+ flux while preventing electron penetration, resulting in stable Li plating/stripping and excellent performance of Li-ion batteries.

The Origin of Fast Lithium-Ion Transport in the Inorganic Solid Electrolyte Interphase on Lithium Metal Anodes

Xia-Xia Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, the ionic transport mechanism in inorganic SEI is revealed through first-principles calculations, and the importance of carrier concentration is highlighted. The low ionic conductivity in bulk inorganic SEI is attributed to its low carrier concentration, while the Li2O/LiF interface exhibits high carrier concentration and ionic conductivity.

Molecular Simulations of the Microstructure Evolution of Solid Electrolyte Interphase during Cyclic Charging/Discharging

Po-Yu Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the formation and evolution of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) films for a Li-metal anode under cyclic charging/discharging processes in two distinct dimensions, namely, electrolyte compositions and initial surface morphologies. The simulations suggest that regardless of the electrolyte compositions and initial anode morphologies, inhomogeneous Li reduction occurs, leading to the formation of Li-reduction hotspots during cyclic charging cycles, which could serve as the seed for subsequent dendrite growth. The findings provide insights for designing artificial SEI layers or electrolytes for long-life, high-capacity Li-ion batteries.

A Growing Appreciation for the Role of LiF in the Solid Electrolyte Interphase

Jian Tan et al.

Summary: Rechargeable lithium batteries have transformed energy storage technology, but their further commercialization is hindered by short lifetime and safety issues, mainly due to the unstable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and uncontrolled lithium dendrite growth. Research on SEI worldwide has focused on its debated structure and composition, particularly the role of the main component LiF. This review covers the development history of the SEI model, fundamental understanding of SEI, categorization of anode materials generating LiF in SEI, characterization techniques of SEI layers, transport mechanism of Li+ ions within SEI, physical properties of LiF, and analysis of LiF sources, offering insights for future research directions to promote large-scale applications of lithium metal batteries.
