Synthesis and Characterization of peri-Heptacene on a Metallic Surface

Kalyan Biswas et al.

Summary: This study reports the successful on-surface synthesis of the largest pristine member of the n-PA family, peri-heptacene, on an Au(111) substrate under ultra-high vacuum conditions. High-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy and theoretical simulations provide insights into the chemical structure of this previously elusive compound. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals that peri-heptacene exhibits an antiferromagnetic open-shell singlet ground state and a singlet-triplet spin-flip inelastic excitation with an effective exchange coupling of 49 meV.

Magnetic Interactions Between Radical Pairs in Chiral Graphene Nanoribbons

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: This study characterized the magnetic states of chiral graphene nanoribbons by substitution of hydrogen atoms with ketones, leading to the generation of unpaired pi radicals that can interact via exchange coupling. The interactions between these radical states were found to depend significantly on factors such as chirality and the presence of ketone functionalization, and the parameters for accurately describing these systems within the mean-field Hubbard model were determined. Overall, this research provides insights for theoretically modeling and designing GNR-based nanostructures with tunable magnetic properties.

On-surface synthesis and characterization of nitrogen-substituted undecacenes

Kristjan Eimre et al.

Summary: A successful on-surface synthesis strategy was used to synthesize three undecacene analogs substituted with four nitrogen atoms, and their electronic properties and energy level alignment changes were studied in detail. These nitrogen-substituted acenes and their analogs could potentially be important building-blocks for organic electronics and spintronics.

Defect-Induced π-Magnetism into Non-Benzenoid Nanographenes

Kalyan Biswas et al.

Summary: The synthesis of nanographenes with open-shell ground states has attracted increasing attention due to their interesting physicochemical properties and potential applications in carbon-based magnetism. This study reports the on-surface synthesis of three open-shell nanographenes with non-benzenoid structures and investigates their properties using various techniques. The results provide access to new types of open-shell nanographenes that were previously difficult to synthesize.

Carbon-based nanostructures as a versatile platform for tunable π-magnetism

Dimas G. de Oteyza et al.

Summary: The emergence of pi-magnetism in open-shell nanographenes was theoretically predicted a long time ago, but their experimental characterization has been challenging due to their strong chemical reactivity. In recent years, on-surface synthesis under vacuum conditions has provided new opportunities for precise engineering of nanographenes, leading to significant progress in controlling electron spin states and interactions at the atomic scale using scanning probe techniques.

Unravelling the Open-Shell Character of Peripentacene on Au(111)

Ana Sanchez-Grande et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic compounds with multiple fused aromatic rings, some of which exhibit open-shell magnetic ground states. Recent research has focused on the synthesis and study of acene and fused acene (periacene) families, with experimental evidence of a magnetic ground state reported for isolated peripentacene molecules. This discovery contributes to a better understanding of organic compounds with magnetic properties, particularly in the development of carbon-based spintronic devices.

Open-Shell Graphene Fragments

Wangdong Zeng et al.

Summary: The electronic properties of finite-sized graphene fragments are strongly dependent on their topological structures, especially when they possess extended zigzag edges. Synthesis of open-shell molecules with unique magnetic activity is challenging, and can be predicted and analyzed using Clar's sextets and density functional theory. Their magnetic activity and quantum properties make them promising materials for carbon-based spintronic and quantum devices.

Large magnetic exchange coupling in rhombus-shaped nanographenes with zigzag periphery

Shantanu Mishra et al.

Summary: Nanographenes with zigzag edges are predicted to exhibit non-trivial pi-magnetism, but their magnetic stability has been limited by weak exchange coupling. Recent synthesis of two large rhombus-shaped nanographenes on gold and copper surfaces shows a significant magnetic exchange coupling.
