Direct visualization of polaron formation in the thermoelectric SnSe

Laurent P. Rene de Cotret et al.

Summary: SnSe is a layered material with high thermoelectric efficiency due to its anomalously low thermal conductivity caused by strong anharmonic coupling. The carrier system in SnSe is also determined by strong coupling to phonons, as visualized by polaron formation. The response of phonons to photodoping in SnSe shows bimodal and anisotropic lattice distortions that drive carrier localization. Quasi-one-dimensional polarons form quickly (300 fs), while three-dimensional polarons take longer (4 ps) due to the anisotropic electron-phonon coupling in SnSe. These results reveal a high density of polarons in SnSe at optimal doping levels, highlighting the importance of electron-phonon coupling for thermoelectric performance.

Local Atomic Configuration in Pristine and A-Site Doped Silver Niobate Perovskite Antiferroelectrics

Jing Gao et al.

Summary: Antiferroelectrics have attracted increasing research interests due to their potential in energy storage applications and intriguing structural characteristics. This study investigates the atomic structure and evolution of AgNbO3-based antiferroelectrics upon La doping using local-structure methods. The results reveal a correlation between cation displacements and the disruption of these displacements by La incorporation, which may explain the observed anomalous dielectric properties. Additionally, spatial ordering of cation vacancies and coordination with oxygen octahedral tilting are observed in La-doped samples, relieving lattice strain.

Anomalous Thermopower and High ZT in GeMnTe2 Driven by Spin's Thermodynamic Entropy

Sichen Duan et al.

Summary: By controlling the spin's thermodynamic entropy, the enhanced thermoelectric performance of GeMnTe2 has been demonstrated in this study, with the anomalously large thermopower originating from the disordering of spin orientation under finite temperature. The manipulation of spin-system entropy by modifying the hybridization between Te-p and Mn-d orbitals has been shown to be an effective strategy, with Se doping effectively enlarging the thermopower without affecting carrier concentration or band gap.
