Analysis and design of an adjustable stiffness three-axis horizontal vibration isolator using elastic columns and a string in tension

M. Utku Demir et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to design a horizontal vibration isolation system with adjustable quasi-zero-stiffness along three axes. By placing a string in the central axis of the system and using a string tensioning mechanism, the horizontal stiffness of the elastic columns can be tuned, allowing for the adjustment of translational and torsional natural frequencies. Parametric studies and calculations are conducted to quantify the robustness and transmissibility of the system. The results show that by selecting the appropriate parameters, the system can achieve a very large isolation bandwidth at low frequencies.

A novel integrated quasi-zero stiffness vibration isolator for coupled translational and rotational vibrations

Kan Ye et al.

Summary: The integrated translational-rotational QZS vibration isolator designed in this paper using the cam-roller mechanism can provide high-static-low-dynamic stiffness in two directions simultaneously, with independent excitations in translational and rotational directions but mutual interaction. The proposed QZS system shows better isolation performance in both translational and rotational directions compared to the linear system without the cam-roller mechanism.

Six degrees of freedom vibration isolation with Euler springs

G. L. Leandri et al.

Summary: The novel design allows column springs in Euler buckling mode to be laterally stable, providing vibration isolation in six degrees of freedom. The stiffness was analytically modeled to achieve resonant frequencies of 1.13 Hz vertically, 1.68 Hz horizontally, and 2.58 Hz in roll. A prototype vibration isolator demonstrated a 2x reduction in vertical vibration at 2 Hz, and a 100x reduction in vertical, horizontal, and roll vibrations above 20 Hz.

Design and test of an adjustable quasi-zero stiffness device and its use to suspend masses on a multi-modal structure

A. D. Shaw et al.

Summary: This paper describes a device capable of exhibiting quasi-zero stiffness, with independent adjustment mechanisms for stiffness and symmetry, allowing for extremely low stiffness adjustment. Experimental testing shows that the device locks-up due to friction at low frequencies, but acts as an efficient linear isolator at high frequencies.
