PEGylated and zwitterated silica nanoparticles as doxorubicin carriers applied in a breast cancer cell line: Effects on protein corona formation

Jussania Almeida Gnoatto et al.

Summary: Nanomaterials form protein coronas on their surfaces when exposed to biological fluids, which can be changed by surface functionalization. In this study, doxorubicin-loaded silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) were prepared using a simple poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and zwitterionic (ZWT) surface modification method to avoid protein corona formation. The results showed that both PEGylated and zwitterated SiNPs improved biocompatibility and exhibited a stronger cytotoxic effect in breast cancer cells compared to bare SiNPs.
